Join us on June 14, 2009, as the Yellowstone
Association celebrates the opening of its new
headquarters in the historic Hall's Mercantile building.
Located in Gardiner, Montana, within sight of the
Roosevelt Arch, the building was purchased by
Yellowstone Association in 2007 as part of its Legacy
for Learning campaign. Its renovation, completed in
April, restored the historical look of the building, which
was originally designed by park architect Robert
Reamer. Built in 1903, Hall's Mercantile served local
residents and visitors to the park from its opening in
1903 through the mid-1950s. A sign painted on the
west side of the building boasted its slogan: "W.A.
Hall, We Sell Everything." Great care was taken during
the renovation to recreate the original look and feel of
the building-including a display in the lobby of old
photos of the mercantile and the preservation of the
store's original freezer, which now occupies a section
of one lobby wall. In 1962, the Hall family sold the
building to Cecil and Ethlyn Paris, who converted it
into a restaurant, Cecil's Fine Foods, which operated
into the 1990s. In recent years, the building had fallen
into disrepair. The community of Gardiner has been
enthused about Yellowstone Association's purchase,
preservation, and restoration of this landmark that has
been a part of the Gardiner landscape for over 100
years.
The new headquarters houses an educational
bookstore, where visitors can stop to get information,
maps, and guidebooks on their way into the park;
offices for staff; and two classrooms. The classrooms
will allow the Institute to expand its course offerings.
Housing the Yellowstone Association in one location
also provides maximum organizational efficiency,
which will, in turn, maximize funding available for
Yellowstone National Park.
The celebration takes place on Sunday, June 14,
2009, from 1 to 3 p.m. Superintendent of Yellowstone
National Park, Suzanne Lewis, will be the featured
speaker. Yellowstone Association members, as well
as the public, are encouraged to stop by and join in
the celebration of this much anticipated milestone for
both Yellowstone Association and the community of
Gardiner.

Roosevelt Rendezvous
|
|
It's time to sign up for this year's Roosevelt
Rendezvous program! For four nights, participants will
enjoy the exclusive use of the Roosevelt Lodge, which
will have closed to the general public for the season.
During the day, under the guidance of Institute
naturalists, program participants will hike, wildlife
watch, and explore the history and geology of
Yellowstone National Park. At night, they will
reconvene in the lodge, where they will enjoy buffet
dinners, evening programs with guest speakers, and
the opportunity to compare notes on the day's
activities. This year's program offers a new feature:
participants will have the opportunity to provide
comments and suggestions in advance and their
feedback-including new field trip options-will be
worked into the program.
Participants will enjoy lodging in a
private cabin, with a shared bath at Roosevelt Lodge.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided each day.
The program will be offered starting September 11
and 15, 2009. Rates start at $679 per person.

We're Looking for a Great Deal on a Used Car
|
|
Do you have a used car that you are willing to donate
to the Yellowstone Association? We are looking for
one fuel-efficient vehicle that will be used to transport
our staff throughout Yellowstone National Park in the
course of our daily operations. It doesn't need to be
fancy, but it does need to be in good condition
because our maintenance budget is limited, and it is
a long way to the nearest full-service mechanic.
Ideally, we would like to locate a vehicle that can be
delivered to the park or picked up within a day's drive
of our headquarters in Gardiner, Montana. Your
donation to the Yellowstone Association is tax-
deductible to the extent allowed by law. For more
information, please contact Jeff Brown, director of
education, at 406-848-2845. Thank you!
