Homeschooling just seems like real work. Most parents say it is highly rewarding work - but work just the same. Meeting the demands of teaching along with all the other demands in life can be tough. The one demand we hear parents pulling their hair out over is helping their kids with tough subjects. Now we are offering a support package for any math, science, English, or literature curriculum. We have on staff certified tutors in college calculus, English, literature, and a variety of college science classes. So we are ready to help!

Getting Ready for Fall and Choosing the Right Math Course
We OFTEN receive questions from parents asking us to assist them in sifting through what amounts to a myriad of course options available to them at the beginning of each new school year. As always, we believe parents are the best at choosing what works best for their students. However, we do have some suggestions and ideas on how to evaluate those courses to help parents make informed, and hopefully easier, decisions about math courses.

In this newsletter we take a look at what is important in a math course, the NEW solutions manual to make grading so much easier on Harold Jacobs' Algebra 1 course, and a quick online quiz to evaluate your student's readiness for Algebra.

What is important when selecting and teaching a math course?

1. Look for a strong math program - one that will prepare students for the future.

2. Go for those who use high quality textbooks or college textbooks whenever they can.

3.  Look for something with video and support!

5. Get your student working with you to review curriculum online. Most have samples they provide. Let your student help you choose the plan.

6. When you order - get a syllabus and work with your student to decide how much they will do daily or weekly.

7. Review and make sure they are doing the work - aggressively at first - then as they start to take responsibility  for their own work, you can do less frequent checks.

8. When they have problems do NOT be too quick to solve it for them. Learning how to understand and communicate difficulties is a big part of the problem solving skill.

9. When outside help is needed, let them take the initiative and follow through. This will help them to learn to communicate difficulties and interact with others - as well as to take responsibility of getting the solutions.

10. If your student does have a gift for math your main job will be to keep them motivated and track progress. As you know - when they get into college they will not even get this much support!
