The Big Picture Behind Corporate Social Responsibility
In a recent article in PRSA Tactics, journalist Amy Jacques highlighted several major corporations and how each company is taking
corporate social responsibility to the next level. The triple bottom line of
corporate social responsibility includes: people, planet and profit. This
triple bottom line encompasses giving back to the community as well as
sustainability.
One company Jacques approached was
the quirky ice cream company, Ben and Jerry's. Ben and Jerry's was founded on
the principle of giving back to the community. The company serves as an
activist for a number of different issues and organizations. Although Ben and
Jerry's corporate culture is unique, the company prides itself in being
extremely transparent when it comes to corporate social responsibility. Through
campaigns, flavors, programs, values-led sourcing, social justice initiatives
and the Ben and Jerry's Foundation, the company has become an advocate brand
and has built corporate social responsibility into its core values.
Another company Jacques discussed
was the Eastman Kodak Company. Kodak believes that a company's success
can be measured by its contribution to the advancement of society. Many of Kodak's successes are attributed to their corporate social responsibility programs which includes sustainability. Recycling plays a large role in the company's sustainable practices so Kodak decided to incorporate a green and yellow leaf into the
company logo. This leaf serves as a symbol of transparency to the public and identifies Kodak's environmental improvement programs. Kodak takes pride in its long-standing dedication to sustainability.
Corporate social responsibility
is not a new concept. However, ways and methods in which corporations and
companies give back to the community have changed. Transparency is the key to
helping customers, shareholders, partners and investors understand how a company
is serving the community.

Social Media Should Be Sociable

In a recent article entitled "How to market like a pro on
Facebook," author Justin Levy explains how the success and value of social
media can be measured in a campaign. Many companies are concerned with the
number of fans or followers they have in comparison to the competition.
However, the company with less fans and followers might be using social media
more effectively and getting better results.
The key to successful social media is establishing a
personal connection and relationship between consumer and company. It's about
the conversations that happen and being strategic. Companies should engage the
audience by asking questions, commenting and talking with customers. By doing these few simple tasks, a brand can
become a more interactive player in a technologically driven world.
If a company approaches social media as a channel solely for
promotion, then it is not using social media to its full advantage. Consumers
today are seeking transparency and want truthful information. Consumers are not
always searching for discounts - sometimes they just want to connect with companies
they like.
