Emerging Social Media: Foursquare
Many
companies have a Facebook fan page or a Twitter page. However, social media is now
being taken to the streets via GPS and mobile phones. Location-based social
media like Foursquare allows customers to interact with friends and businesses in
their neighborhood. Customers simply "check-in" to a location on their mobile device and receive promotional offers from nearby companies or connect with
friends who are geographically close by. Foursquare is the next phase of social
media and companies should use it to their advantage. There are four primary
methods in which Foursquare can increase brand awareness and boost product
sales.
- Create incentives for new customers - Offering
incentives using Foursquare can provide an instant interaction between brand
and consumer. By offering a discount or even a free demo to those who "check-in"
at a company location, consumers will feel as though they are receiving
special care. lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
- Location based customer reviews - Consumers can leave their feedback and reviews of companies on Foursquare. With the
emergence and development of "augmented reality," customer comments can be
viewed by location within the store with a mobile phone camera. lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
- Maximize the success of events - A Foursquare
check-in for a company can increase productivity during
large events. Upon check-in, companies will be able to see how many attendees
are at events. Sales and marketing teams can utilize Foursquare as a marketing
tool to meet prospective clients and customers during trade shows or networking
events. lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
- Market intelligence - Foursquare
announced it will release a free analytics tool that will provide businesses
with information and statistics about the customers who visit and check-in at
their business locations. This information will offer businesses insight into
the effectiveness of their marketing efforts and strategies.

Digital Newsrooms Must be Interactive
In an article entitled, "From
static to style: Online newsrooms in the digital era," media officials David
Henderson, author of "Making News in the Digital Era" and Ed Lallo, partner of
The News Group Net, offered their critical insight into the development of
corporate online newsrooms. David Henderson explains that
online newsrooms must be influenced by journalistic style and dynamic content.
Online newsrooms are not only for the media but shareholders, business
partners, customers, donors and volunteers. A static newsroom filled with
company press releases is no longer sufficient. Consumers are looking for
articles, photos and videos in a company's online newsroom. Companies should view their
newsrooms as a daily newspaper covering the industry. Lallo urges companies to
write for their core audience by adding value to articles. Consumers seek
credibility and transparency. In order to achieve this, companies must cover
industry competitors and challenges in their digital newsroom. Lallo identifies
the Imperial Sugar Company's online newsroom as one of the most innovative and
effective he has ever seen. Visit the Imperial Sugar Company's newsroom for
ideas and inspiration www.iscnewsroom.com.
