Tips and Trends for Annual Report Seasona

It's that time of year again! Annual report season is just around the corner and investor relations professionals are busy brainstorming new tips and tracking trends for their 2010 editions.

One major trend for this years' themes is a focus on people.  Many organizations are highlighting human connections within their reports by showcasing employees, loyal customers and community relationships.  The people theme is especially popular for 2010 as many companies negatively affected by the past year's economic downturn search for positive topics to focus on besides financial reviews.

Producing both print and online editions of annual reports is another trend now being practiced by 91% of U.S. companies. Online reports can feature video or audio material and hyperlinks to the past year's press releases, news articles or other information, making them attractive ways to add detail and expand ideas.

Finally, a number of organizations have begun to include sections about their corporate social responsibility (CSR), highlighting their corporate citizenship, community relations and local volunteer efforts.  According to the results of a 2008 NIRI survey, 24% of companies provided corporate social responsibility information in their annual reports, while 12% produced a stand-alone CSR report.

Annual report season can be an exciting time for companies to reflect on their strengths and find creative ways to showcase their vision.  Vollrath Associates specializes in annual report concept and production.  We'd enjoy talking to you about ideas for your 2009 report.  If you're interested in discussing one or more of these trends or ideas for your upcoming report, please contact us at info@vollrathpr.com

100 Best Global Brands

Recently, BusinessWeek announced its annual listing of the 100 Best Global Brands. In the past year, the recession has pelted the public's trust in not only financial institutions, but in the big-business landscape in general. Lower trust in corporations combined with weakening consumer sales has jeopardized the economic value of many coveted brands, hence raising expectations for a few new twists in this year's list.

To rank the worth of these brands, BusinessWeek teamed up with Interbrand, the world's largest brand consultancy firm, and created a strict formula. To qualify for the top 100, a brand must derive at least a third of its earnings from outside its home country, be recognizable beyond its base of customers and have publicly available marketing and financial data. Next, each brand's monetary value was calculated using its company's total sales minus tangible assets while taking into account the brand's overall risk profile and future earnings.

Coming in at the number one spot again this year was Coca-Cola, with a brand asset value of $68.7 billion. Despite the recession, Coke credits its success in 2009 to its new Coke Zero product, which boasts a more "macho" no-calorie image than Diet Coke. The number two spot went to IBM, which boosted its brand relevance with a very-visible corporate-wide focus on sustainability. Third place went to Microsoft, which, despite declining sales, spent the year taking on rivals with new services like Bing and a competitive marketing campaign.

The top ten brands in BusinessWeek's listing are:
1.  Coca-Cola
2.  IBM
3.  Microsoft
4.  GE
5.  Nokia
6.  McDonalds
7.  Google
8.  Toyota
9.  Intel
10. Disney

Quote of the Month

Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes.  This is not a coincidence.
