Managing an Army of Online Branding Ambassadors

Imagine an online world where every one of your company's employees is a brand ambassador, posting positive messages about your organization and its services on their blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.

However, employees' online musings are not always so rosy, and crisis-control situations have developed after workers have posted everything from confidential financial memos and personal-life dramas, to complaints about their clients and superiors. Take, for instance, a recent tweet by a new-hire of Cisco Systems proclaiming, "Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San José and hating the work."

Following horror stories like these, many corporations are developing guidelines to prevent employee postings from wreaking havoc on their company's public image and customer relationships. Read more about online employee management approaches in this recent BusinessWeek article.
When Service Means Survivalcs

With many companies still searching for ways to trim costs as consumer confidence continues to skid, BusinessWeek's third annual Customer Service Champs ranking warns that cuts in the wrong places can cause devastating blows to an organization's market share. The reality is, the best performers in the magazine's ranking are actually doing more to improve customer service on the front lines, while cutting costs in other ways.

Here are five ideas that top-rankers are using to keep costs down and customer service solid:

  • Flex Your Workforce: Even if staffing levels dip due to layoffs, make the most of the workers you have by cross-training employees so they can step up to fill a variety of needs.
  • Spoil Surviving Staff: Slashing jobs and benefits can seriously damage morale. If you must cut back, keep the front lines happy with flexibility and other rewards.
  • Invest in Simple Technology: It may not be the best time to upgrade your organization with pricey software, but easy solutions like Twitter and Web cams can link customers with remote representatives at little cost.
  • Baby Your Best Customers: Keep your most active buyers coming back with faster service, extra attention and flexible rules.
  • Empower Your Purchasing: Unify purchasing departments to get better deals across different locations of your company.
