Social Networks Creating Transformational Change in Consumer Behavior
social
"Global Faces and Networked Places," a new report on social networking's ever-expanding global footprint, shares eye-opening statistics about the rapid growth of social media sites and the amount of time people are spending on them.  The report, released by the Nielsen Company, a worldwide consumer data and media collection organization, pointed out:
  • Two-thirds of the world's Internet population visit a social network or blogging site on a regular basis.
  • Social networking communities have taken a foothold in every major global market, from 50% of the online population in places like Switzerland and Germany, to as high as 80% in Brazil.
  • Time spent on social networking and blogging sites is growing three times faster than the rate of overall Internet growth.  While the total amount of time spent online globally increased by only 18%, the amount of time spent on "member community" sites rose by 63% to 45 billion minutes in 2008.
  • Facebook has become the largest player on the global stage.  The amount of time people spend on the site increased by a massive 566% - from 3.1 billion to 20.5 billion minutes annually.  In fact, it's the ninth most-popular brand online.
