METROsquash has State Champions

8 METROsquash students participated in last weekend's Illinois State Singles Championships at the Lakeshore Athletic Club.  The weekend was full of squash and fun.  A special thank you to Brian Horwood and Peter Wendt for hosting the tournament.   In the men's 3.5 it was all METROsquash as Jordan Collins beat Christian Williams in a close five game match for the 3.5 finals.  A special shout out to METROsquash Program Director, Kerry Fliss, for  taking down her opponents in the 2.5 draw to become the 2.5 Illinois State Champion.

Coming Next Issue:
High School Acceptances
In October all fourteen eighth grade students and many of their METROsquash mentors traveled to the Chicago Public Schools high school fair at McCormick Place where students began deciding upon the combination of selective enrollment, charter, magnet, and military academies to which they would apply.  By December METROsquash students had applied to over forty schools (averaging 17 schools each).  Ten students applied to Catholic schools and four students applied to boarding schools.  Students' efforts to apply to a wide range of schools has paid off. Every student has been accepted to a range of non-neighborhood schools, giving them strong options.  METROsquash has met with each family to ensure they have all of the information necessary to make the
optimal selection.

Host METROsquash Students This Summer
Do you have a cabin or vacation home?
METROsquash is looking for volunteers to host students this summer for out-of-town visits. Give our students the chance to escape the heat and pollution of the city and explore a new place. Please e-mail Jolee at
jolee@metrosquash.org if you are interested in this great opportunity.

METROsquash Needs Your Help
Due to recent burglaries at the University Church, our computer lab has had several PC's and laptops stolen.  Now that adequate security measures are in place, METROsquash is asking for your help to donate available PC's and laptops with Windows XP or better, as well as any printers.  Having a functioning computer lab here at METROsquash is crucial to the academic success of all our students.  Help our students succeed academically and beyond by donating any available computers or printers to METROsquash.  To donate, call Brandon McNab at 773-241-5150 or e-mail at brandon@metrosquash.org
Sex Education Day
Students Navigate the Teen Years

Sex educationMETROsquash students from every grade showed up for our 1st annual Sex Education Workshop, held at the University Church.  Students were split into gender / age appropriate groups and visited various stations that helped shed light on areas that many students can be uncomfortable talking about.  METROsquash would like to extend its thanks to Donya Hooks, Joanne Swiatek and Marcus Bosch; without their amazing contributions this day would not have been possible.
