Greetings!
Are you a Pouncer or Ponderer?
Yesterday, Marce Verzano-O'Brien from the National Center on Program Management and Fiscal Operation, challenged Early Head Start leaders to think about our approach to making data-driven decisions.
Pouncers swallow information and process it quickly. They come to conclusion and act swiftly.
Ponderers absorb information and consider it intentionally. They make decisions and proceed deliberately.
What data and information do you regularly collect about your program and use to make strategic decisions? We've noticed that many of you are using the Program Administration Scale (PAS), CLASS and ITERS/ECERS. Which do you find most meaningful?
If you tend to pounce, do you have a team member who ponders to provide balance? If you naturally ponder, who do you rely on to bring a pounce to your leadership team?
Your data driven decisions are reflected in the success of your programs across our region. It makes such a difference in the lives of our children, families and staff. Thank you for that.
Yours while pouncing and pondering,

Barbara Curtis
We are so very sad and stunned to have lost our friend and colleague, Barbara Curtis, in May. It was especially sobering to see Barbara's lovely face on the huge projector screen at the EHS cluster meeting today.
Barbara and I were scheduled to co-present at the Birth to Three conference this month. We were going to speak publicly about Oral Language Development and a critical component to any program's success: Reflective Supervision. Offline, however, I know that we would be sharing stories about our children and her grandchildren, her faith and my hope. I never had a conversation with Barbara that didn't include her passion for her work on behalf of infants, toddlers and families living at and below poverty. Like you, we are moved to carry her work forward.
We've learned that her family has created the Barbara Curtis Memorial Fund in her honor. If you are interested, please contact:

With respect for the diversity of our community and in appreciation for Barbara's life and work, let's reflect on her last lesson to us all: we've no idea how long we have to be the people we are supposed to be...say a little prayer, kiss your parents and children, go into your community and make a difference. |

TIP OF THE MONTH: Yikes - Crib Recall!!
Ugh - what to do with your recalled cribs and how to find funds to purchase new? Many of you have creative ideas - what else are you doing? Let us know and we'll share your good ideas with your peers...
New Crib Standards
Beginning December 28, 2012, any crib provided by child care facilities and family child care homes must meet new and improved federal safety standards. The new standards take effect for manufacturers, retailers, importers and distributors on June 28, 2011, addressing deadly hazards previously seen with traditional drop-side rails, requiring more durable hardware and parts and mandating more rigorous testing.

Creating a Positive and Productive Workplace in Our Centers

What kind of center to you want to lead? Come share your strategies or gather ideas from your peers! Register now - space is limited
