 Teachers' News and Notes

A Newsletter for Early Childhood Professionals

April 2011

Greetings!

Happy Spring!

Although this publication has been on hiatus for a little while, you've been a part of our thinking and conversation every day.

We respect you and the work you do.  We hope this newsletter can support you as you partner with families to care for and educate very young children.

We'll be turning to you and your directors over the next few months to see what ideas and themes you'd like to see highlighted here.

This month, we've got information and links to practical resources on teaching self-regulation that you can use today!

April was Autism Awareness month but the resources we've linked below are appropriate every month.
With appreciation,

Amy and Candace

The Why of What We Do
hugging

We carefully teach children procedures for self-management.

Because...

Their behavior improves when we do!

Do all the teachers in your program know these procedures and how to successfully teach them to children?

If not, talk to your director - we offer training to teachers just like you on these and other best practice skills and strategies.  Encourage your director to contact us and use the coupon at the end of the newsletter.

April was Autism Awareness Month

April was autism awareness month, but the challenge is to be aware every month.  How will you make sure kids and families on the autism spectrum are welcome and thriving in your program?

Resources from the Centers for Disease Control

These are valuable resources that the CDC developed for early childhood educators:

Autism Spectrum Disorders: Fact Sheet
Tips for Talking to Parents

Milestones Checklists

Sound Advice

Sound Advice

Parents who receive a diagnosis of autism of their child face a daunting set of questions.

Their teachers have lots of questions, too.

As is always true, we serve children best when we meaningfully partner with families.

To provide families with guidance and support, the American Academy of Pediatrics, led by the Council on Children with Disabilities (COCWD) Autism Subcommittee, has created a series of audio interviews with medical experts and parents.

You can listen to Sound Advice on Autism.

Whether or not you have a child in your class with a diagnosis of autism, it is likely just a matter of time until you do.  These audio interviews have valuable information for all of us.

100 Day Kit & Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Toolkit

The Autism Speaks 100 Day Kit and the Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism Toolkit was  created specifically for newly diagnosed families, to make the best possible use of the 100 days following the diagnosis of autism/aspergers.

 Brochure

Is Your One-Year Old Communicating With You?

This brochure encourages parents to share any

concerns they have about their baby's language development with their pediatrician as early as possible. It also provides early language and social milestones in a checklist format.

This would be a wonderful addition to your center's family resource library!

How Do I Know if My Baby has a Language Delay?

Do you work with one-year olds?  Be sure to check out this excerpt from "Is Your One Year Old Communicating With You?"
