Teacher Surveys
August survey: Communication with Adults
Why do some parents always want to talk about hard issues when you are the only teacher on duty and kids are screaming? Why does the director always seem to be on the phone when you walk by and really need to talk? Why doesn't the morning staff ever pass along important family information to the the afternoon staff? Why does the morning staff ask the same question? Communicating with adults is tricky!
Tips from your peers:
- Think before speaking.
- Try to explain things in a different way, if necessary.
- Communication is verbal and non-verbal.
- It is important to keep communication positive.
- Assume good intent from everyone all the time.

Out and About
Celebrate Fall!
Everyone can celebrate the wonders of Fall at McLean Community Center's Harvest Happenings. In addition to carnival games and activities, the live performances will feature Kidsinger Jim and Rocknoceros. The event will be held on September 25th from 11 AM-2 PM.
See a Show!
Get your tickets early! ANNIE is coming to the Olney Theatre Center from November 17 to Janueary 2. You can bet your bottom dollar that this story of hope, love, and family will leave you singing about the promise of tomorrow. Think About Books!
The National Book Festival hits the National Mall on September 25, 2010. The festival is free and open to the public. Activities for children, which are fun and promote reading, can be found in the popular "Let's Read America" pavilion. The Pavilion of the States salutes literary traditions of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories. Many great reads are available in the Book Sales Pavilion. This is a great day and message for children and families. |

Strategies, Tips and Tricks
September is here and maybe you have new families and children in your classroom? Make sure you invest in your relationships with families starting today! You'll enjoy them in the moment and really appreciate the trustworthy foundation if (ok, when) you have to have a difficult conversation.
- Identify. Do you know every child's parents/family members names? Beyond Mom and Dad!
- Connect. You've got the thing the value the most in the world in common - work it!
- Stretch. Outside of being parents, these adults have interests and passions. Challenge yourself to know something non-kid related about each parent or family member.
- Consider. Behind every rushed drop off, forgotten set of extra clothes and questionable comment is a busy, distracted person who may even be caring for a sick parent, worried about their job or battling an illness themselves. They are also trying their best with the skills, resources and energy they have today. Let's be part of the solution - let's not rush to judgement.
Remember, these apply to family childcare providers, teachers, assistants, cook/floaters, and anyone else who cares for a little one! |
