Post on FFF's
Greetings!

Happy New Year!

Recently, we reflected on 2009 and made our resolutions. Now it is all about implementation.

What are your big goals for your center, staff and self this year? How will you know that you've achieved them? How will you know if you've veered off the path to success?  More importantly, how do you get back on track?

Together, our Directors' Network is here to help you set and achieve important and valuable goals.  With your peers, we'll encourage you and keep you moving in the right direction.

Being a leader in an early childhood program is always a challenge.  With the support of a great network, you'll find solutions faster and that is good for children, families, staff and you.

Please continue to let us know how this network can serve you best.  Thank you for the work you do,

Amy and Candace

Set and Support Important, Achievable Goals
Employees feel motivated when they sense they are making progress

We used to think it took lots of money to motivate employees.  Especially in this economy, you'll be glad to hear that according to Teresa Amabile's article in the Harvard Business Review (and captured in ExchangeEveryDay) that isn't really the case.

Employees report feeling motivated when they are making professional progress.  What does that mean for Directors and Administrators?

Set Joint Goals
Make time to sit and talk with each employee about goals that are important to them and important to your program.  Commit the goals to paper, including the support that you are going to offer to help them be successful.  You might consider these Competencies for Early Childhood Professionals...

Check In
The success rate will be higher (not to mention the corresponding motivation factor) if you check in, offer feedback and course correction (if necessary) along the way.

Celebrate Progress
As you check in as they move along the critical path to achievement, celebrate mini-milestones.  You know what they say - you get what you tend to - so tend to the efforts being made toward goal achievement!

Honor Achievement
If everyone has a goal and everyone is making progress, you'll soon have a lot to celebrate.  Make sure you acknowledge accomplishments in ways that match individual preferences.  Some people want a ticker tape parade.  Others appreciate a heartfelt, but private, note.  Know your staff individually and respond accordingly.

Set Another Goal
If making progress is the key to motivation at work, we're going to need to set new goals as we achieve current ones.  Help your teaching staff make central to your organization's culture.

Here's to a motivated staff!
