Greetings!

We hope you are enjoying summer with young children!

Do you remember summer days filled with outdoor activity from your childhood.  Outside play, with fresh air and physical activity, is important.  Interaction with nature sparks curiosity, imagination and creativity.  With childhood obesity at an all time high, it is especially important to get our kids out and active - and to replenish their energy with healthy snacks and meals.

So, make sure you have plenty of water, a healthy snack and sunscreen and take the kids out to play!

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) offers tips and fun ideas to encourage healthy eating during the summer

Check it out ...

While outdoor activities are a great way to promote exercise for a healthy lifestyle, you may be concerned about how to talk to 5 and 6 year olds about sun safety.  This is a SAMSHA approved, complete lesson plan, with resources to download and print, on helping children avoid sunburn now and the risk of skin cancer later.

More of what you are already doing...

Most of you are cooking in your classrooms on a regular basis, (daily - when possible) and we wanted to share these healthy snack recipes that encourage your preschoolers to get interested and get involved!  Try some avocado dip, sweet potato muffins or whole wheat pretzels and let us know which was especially popular with your group!

You are encouraging children to move everyday - will you consider "Movement Exploration"?  It's as easy as A + B...

A = Think of a basic physical skill that young children can do or are learning to do such as jumping, hopping, waving or balancing.

B = Think of a relationship concept that young children can explore such as big-small, high-low, fast-slow or inside-outside.
A + B = Movement Exploration

Gallop inside of your hoop on the floor.
Now gallop outside of your hoop on the floor.
  Balance on 3 body parts.
  Balance on 4 body parts.
  Wave your streamer high.
  Wave your streamer low.
  Enjoy!

A few of our favorite ideas for outdoor play with children of all ages...
  • Take the babies outside under a tree on a soft blanket and enjoy!
  • Give your toddler a bucket of water, a scrub brush and toy cars or rocks to wash.
  • Ask your local appliance shop for a free refrigerator (or other large appliance) cardboard box. Cut doors and windows in the box to make a fort or playhouse. Toddlers can draw on it with crayons or "paint" it with water and big brushes or sponges.
  • Take a daily walk - if you do this regularly, you'll be able to talk about how your neighborhood looks different as the seasons change.
  • Find a tree that your preschooler can try to climb.
  • Jump rope - here's a list of jump rope songs you might remember from your childhood.
We hope you and the children in your class and care enjoy your time together outside!

Sincerely,
Amy Augenblick and Candace Radoski
