Dr. Michael Mandel is the former chief economist at Business Week, where he helped direct the magazine's coverage of the domestic and global economies. His particular areas of expertise include: how innovation drives growth, and the inability of official economic statistics to properly measure today's economy. Dr. Mandel wrote more than 50 of the magazine's cover stories, including "Innovation, Interrupted" in June 2009, and "The GDP Mirage" in October 2009. He was named one of the top 100 business journalists of the 20th century, and has received multiple awards for his work. Mandel has a PhD in economics from Harvard. He is the author of four books, including a new introductory economics textbook, Economics: The Basics, now being used in college courses across the country. After leaving Business Week in December 2009, Mandel founded Visible Economy LLC, a new venture which combines business and economic journalism with education, using short videos (Our goals: "Credibility, Consistency, Clarity"). His new blog, "Mandel on Innovation and Growth," can be found at www.southmountaineconomics.com. Starting in the fall of 2010, Mandel will be a Senior Fellow at Wharton's Mack Center for Technological Innovation, looking at patterns of domestic and global innovation.

About this Economic Lecture Series

Economists, policy experts and elected officials agree - innovation is crucial to solving the nation's most pressing problems, whether it is climate change, job creation, international competitiveness, dependence on foreign oil, or health care cost containment. We also know that innovation is the key to restoring upstate New York's economy and promoting prosperity in our region.

RIT and Assemblyman Joseph D. Morelle are joining together to present a series of lectures bringing in leading national experts to discuss important trends in innovation policy. Speakers will address the opportunities and challenges facing upstate economy, and give their perspective on the strategies and policies that will help New York move forward.

The lecture series will provide a platform to showcase Rochester's unique assets and capabilities to national leaders, as well as identify ways in which the region can leverage investments being made at the national level. It will provide an opportunity for Rochester regional leaders to share ideas on technology-based economic development strategies, and it will raise local awareness of the opportunities and advantages of the innovation economy.

Under President Bill Destler, RIT is positioning itself as the "Innovation University" and is continuing to expand its role in contributing to innovation policy for the region and nation. Assemblyman Morelle is a leading thinker in the state legislature on innovation policy, and author of the 2005 report Creating a State of Innovation: Unleashing the Power of New York's Entrepreneurial Economy.

Assemblyman Joseph D. Morelle represents the 132nd Assembly District, which includes portions of the city of Rochester and the Monroe County suburbs of Irondequoit and Brighton. He is Chair of the Assembly Standing Committee on Insurance and also serves on the Rules, Ways & Means, Economic Development and Higher Education committees.
