State Funding for Eastman Renovations
Delegation Secures $8 Million for Upgrade of Historic Theater

For more than eight decades, the Eastman Theatre has been a landmark institution of Rochester and Monroe County, a symbol of our thriving cultural community and an enduring tribute to one of this nation's great philanthropic industrialists.

I'm pleased to announce $8 million in Assembly funding that will allow this remarkable legacy to continue for future generations. The University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music will now move forward with $20 million in renovations to this great venue, following more than $5 million in upgrades to the Eastman stage in 2004.

Revamped seating, an expanded lobby, an enclosed walkway between the theater and the Eastman School, and a new gift shop and cafe are among the many improvements to be unveiled when the next phase of work is completed.

Just as it did for most of the 20th Century, the Eastman Theatre will continue to provide great entertainment and artistic enlightenment in the 21st.

I wish to congratulate the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music for their fine stewardship of the Eastman Theatre. University President Joel Seligman and Eastman School Dean Jamal Rossi have in particular been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

A Shared Commitment

As always, I am grateful to my colleagues in the local Assembly delegation: Our dean, Assemblyman David Gantt; Assemblywoman Susan John; and Assemblyman David Koon. Their support and commitment were essential to the success of this effort.

I also want to acknowledge Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for his role in making this funding possible.
