The Center for Pattern Design is a unique community of pattern makers, artists and  inventors of 3-D forms. It is a non-profit and the only one of its kind in the world that brings together those who revel in the magic of cutting new forms of clothing and other products.

We send this, our second issue, to many of you who have received the Antiquity Press newsletters and wondered where they went.  We have evolved!

Also there are many on this month's email list who will receive a complimentary copy as a sample with fond hopes that memberships will jump
. Yes, the economy is dismal; however,  pattern design is basic to many forms of manufacturing and renewed focus on this fundamental skill will help the American economy to restart.  Small business is the backbone of the economy and pattern making creates product.  Encouraging more interest and support for patterning skills is important to creating the next economy in this new century.

tell someone about the Center for Pattern Design.

Thank you!

All submissions will be reviewed by a committee of peers. Submissions are due May 1, 2009.

There will be a announcement to members when we're ready.

Shortly we will have a brand new website with many interactive features such as a Bulletin Board, PayPal, a Calendar of Events, Podcasts and lots more. Everyone will receive an announcement and we will be much relieved to finally launch it!

PEOPLE
  • Julian Roberts
In case you missed him last year, you may get another chance! Plans are in the works for a 2-day, one credit, Subtraction Cutting course in early April at Indiana State University in Bloomington, IN.  The first day will review the basics and introduce many new techniques, including Subtraction Tailoring, and the second day will allow students to experiment with all the new concepts.  Julian in recent London snow.
  • Isabel Toledo  From Joyce Hittisdorf, 2009 President of the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals (ASDP) we get a tip about a wonderful interview with Isabel Toledo, the designer of the moment with her Michelle Obama Inaugural ensemble in yellow wool lace ($500/yard & available!). Isabel speaks about how she views pattern design      and her inspiration.  Also, another great video is this one about Isabel's time at Anne Klein. Drawing by Reuben Toledo
  • No Editions
Check out no editions.   This comapny has an new concept for clothing design and a matching new business model. They use conceptually interesting but simple patterns for their clothes, in several series, that are custom digitally printed from a selection of different visual surface design themes. The garments are printed when half or fully assembled and the final result is quite refined and very individual.  Each printed piece is sold to only one customer.  The best version of mass customization I've seen yet. The collection tours -- MILAN:  2009 February 22 through March 22 Daniele Ghiselli Showroom, www.ghiselli.com
  • Josh Jakus  More evidence of Josh's genius!  Take a look at his latest zipper magic! -- Find it at his site, www.joshjakus.com.
  • Holly McQuillen  From New Zealand, sends word that, for her thesis, she is researching hyperbolic tesselation as applied to the design of clothing, resulting garments that waste no fabric in the layout and cutting. More to come on this -- can't wait to see it!
