Hello Everyone,With our first newsletter from the Center for Pattern Design we embark on a new adventure, exploring the depth of the pattern design world -- all the people, most fascinating patterns, events and ideas that will bring new awareness about the creation of three dimensional forms. The Center for Pattern Design is a
unique community of pattern makers, artists
and inventors of 3-D forms. It is a non-profit and the only one of its kind in the
world that brings together those who revel in the
magic of cutting new forms of clothing and other products. . . .
Help us spread the word, tell someone about the Center for Pattern Design.
Thank you!

NEWS FROM THE CENTER FOR PATTERN DESIGN
New Board Members We are delighted to announce two new members of our Board of Directors,
Candace Crockett and Yoshi Fredisdorf, in addition to myself and Ed Breed. Candace is a nationally known
and collected fiber artist, having had a long career as a Professor of
Art at San Francisco State University. Yoshi is a full time fashion
design instructor for the Illinois Institute of Art with an extensive
background in the fashion business, having worked many years in Japan for Issey
Miyake. Welcome and a big thank you to Candace and Yoshi! We will have 5 members when the Board is complete.
- New Website
Shortly
we will have a brand new website with many interactive features such
as a Bulletin Board, PayPal, a Calendar of Events, Podcasts and lots more. Everyone will receive
an announcement and we will be much relieved to finally launch it!
New Class While in Paris in
November for the Shibori Symposium, I had the opportunity to study
with Madame Picco who was Madame Alix Gres' draper during the last years
of her couture house in Paris. The Center will offer the pleating and pattern secrets
of Gres in a new seminar this year. More next time on time and place, as
the 2009 calendar takes shape.

PEOPLE
- Julian Roberts
For those following his latest adventures, Julian is taking
Subtraction Cutting mainstream, having recently brought his techniques
to British high schools to show students how studying math can lead to fabulous
fashion.
Julian's work this year will involve more intricate Subtraction Cutting designs and techniques -- like this Sunflower
dress using his Plug technique. Julian will be finishing the latest
and larger version of his book, available in 2009. See his site for links to recent work, www.julianand.com.
- Josh Jakus
Josh is a Berkeley,
CA, architect turned accessory designer (both personal and home) and
works in industrial wool felt for his open-flat UM handbags -- an ingenious pattern
design, THE ANSWER for traveling and storing! See the animation of his zip bags at www.joshjakus.com . |
EVENTS
- Shibori Symposium, Paris, November 2008
This was a wonderful gathering of the most interesting pattern and textile work one could
imagine -- many traditional artists from Japan and Europe right next to
the most futuristic applications of shibori in industry. I was
invited to represent the Center, speaking on designing the cut of the cloth together with the surface so that they are integrated from the beginning -- entitled Cloth to Clothes. The next one is in 2 years but don't miss the following item here for more on surface and cut coming together. www.shibori.org Candace Edgerley's Raven shibori piece at www.candaceedgerley.com
Surface Design 2009 Association Conference, Kansas City , MO, May 28 -31, 2009. www.surfacedesign.org .The Surface Design Association Presents: Textile Fusion: An Interactive Fashion Performance. May 30th, 2009, Entry Deadline: Feb. 1, 2009. This is a fashion show like no other and perfect for pattern designers with wild imaginations! One big difference is the elimination of distance between the garments and the viewers. The interactive format will allow close encounters with textile structures, surface treatments, and manipulation of fabric (and cut!). Standing beside each model will be a "sculptural beacon" - a second model wearing sculpted and LED-lighted head wear as well as a simple shift with a heat-pressed description of the exhibited garment. Registration:www.surfacedesign.org/conference.asp
Association of Sewing and Design Professionals, Chicago, October, 2008. For those who have had a post graduate epiphany and realized your true calling is creating beautiful clothes, the ASDP has a new Certification Program (includes pattern making), launched at their recent Chicago conference. www.paccprofessionals.org. After
teaching his methods for over 25 years, I had the wonderful
opportunity to work with Charles Kleibacher, judging the fashion show.
- The Shape of Things: Paper Traditions and Transformations, now through Feb. 15 at The Museum of Craft & Folk Art, San Francisco. Many pattern designers begin their concepts in paper, folded, molded and cut -- everything from origami to lanterns!
- Fashioning Felt,
at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in NYC, March 6-September 7, 2009 Felt is important in that it can hold the form of a sculptural pattern with few cuts. See Josh Jakus' work above. The exhibition will begin with historic examples, showcase hand-made innovations, and exhibit contemporary uses of industrial felt in product design, fashion, architecture, and home furnishings.

PRODUCTS
 - Suzy Furrer, the owner and expert behind San Francisco's Apparel Arts, a Bay Area pattern making mecca, has finished her first book, Building Patterns: The Architecture of Women's Clothing. Suzy is a long-time teacher of a very accurate method of drafting patterns combined with flat pattern techniques -- a method that was used in Paris during the height of the Haute Couture. The book is wonderful and should be a core book in anyone's collection! www.apparel-arts.com

PATTERN PLAY tm
This will be a regular feature in the newsletter. Sometimes it's a challenge, sometimes a gift, sometimes a mystery but always 'pattern for thought'. - Boy's Surface, a math concept conceived by Werner Boy in 1908, gives me the idea for this Pattern Play. To make a unique garment pattern using Boy's Surface, see these images for inspiration. One need not delve into big numbers, but for this Pattern Play challenge, you must use all or part of the concept in the creation of a wearable pattern. See our website for the rules of the game. Send us your entry and win a copy of Julian Robert's Subtraction Cutting School Book plus lots of well-deserved recognition! Due January 23.
