Nature's Own Insulation

Mulch-according to Webster's is derived from old English word melch which means soft.It is a protective covering of organic material spread or left on the ground to reduce evaporation, maintain even soil temperatures, prevent erosion, control weeds,or enrich the soil! Well what else can I add to that except for some reason not enough in fact very few people take the time to do this one garden task that might be the most beneficial thing for our plants especially here in the desert!  For the next few months we will get many samples of sunburned leaves in the nursery. Most if not all could be prevented if a layer of mulch were applied.  All of us are trying to be more aware of the environment.  Mulching may also be the most Earth-friendly thing you can do around your home. Whether you buy bags of mulch or make your own compost, it is all recycled materials Mulch reduces water consumption, and controls weeds-which cuts down own the use of herbicides, plus by reducing erosion saves soil! Mulch may be the most underrated garden tool in the world!
The main benefit to desert gardeners is no doubt the maintaining or lowering of soil temperatures and conservation of moisture.  I liken it to putting a cool towel on the back of your neck. You can feel your body cool down immediately! Mulch has the same effect on the plant by cooling down the soil and allowing the roots of the plant to be more efficient.
