Mid April may be my favorite time of the year as far as the beauty of landscapes and the native desert goes. All of our winter annuals are in full bloom, the subtropical landscape trees and shrubs are blooming or have new vibrant green growth and the desert flowers and trees are waking up and blooming like crazy! I hope you are taking advantage of the great weather and your garden is looking great. This coming Saturday is our 3rd Saturday garden club meeting. If you don't feel your garden is as good as it should be this is a great time to come and learn how to make it better. We meet at 10am at both locations. We are also pleased to announce The Pond Gnome will be on hand to answer questions about ponds and water plants. As always there will plenty of fun, music, and food on hand and we are serving FREE HOT DOGS while they last to keep celebrating our 65th year in business. Hope to see you there!

Weekly Garden Tip
April is the first month that we usually start talking about summer lawns. The dormant bermudagrass lawns are beginning to awaken and green up. Along with their new growth, lawn pests begin to appear. The first major pest that we should be treating for is Pearl Scale. Over the years there have been many treatments with various levels of success for this persistent pest. We have now what we feel is the best product yet for treating this. Hi Yield Grub Fee Zone containing Imidaclroprid is a safe but effective treatment for Pearl Scale. It has always been recommended to start fighting Pearl Scale now and again in May or June because it was at the most vulnerable stage in the life cycle of the pest and treatment was more effective. How do you know if you have Pearl Scale? Typically it only effects hybrid bermudagrasses (tiff,Bob sod,Santa Anna,etc.). Common bermudagrass does not seem to be affected enough to warrant any treatment. The symptom is usually an area that is fairly round in shape and the grass starts dying off in the center and has the appearance that it is not getting enough water. The pearls are easy to find if you dig down to root level and look for a cream colored "pearl" that has a hard shell and a liquid center.
Along with the Grub Free Zone we recommend plenty of sulfur or gypsum and be sure to water and fertilize the turf with much regularity! We are happy to help you diagnose this, just bring in a square of turf including the roots and soil about 8" deep and about 6" square.
