Time To Plant
With the passing of the Spring or Vernal Equinox we are in the low desert officially out of the danger of frost or at least damaging cold weather. The time is now upon us to plant cold sensitive plant material. The list is way too long to name them all here, but we all probably know the most popular. Hibiscus,Bougainvillea,Natal Plum,Ficus, and Bananas just to name a few. You may have also noticed if you have some of these plants in your garden that they are going thru a bit of a change. It is completely normal for Jacarandas,Hibiscus,Citrus and the like to have a lot of yellowing and dropping foliage right now. They are signaling that the weather is changing, and they are getting ready to put on new growth and flower. Most of these plants are also heavy feeders, meaning that we need to be sure that during the growing season (March to October) we are fertilizing regularly. When planting these more tropical in nature plants it is vital to use ample organic material and gypsum or soil sulfur to insure good drainage. Most plants of this nature like well drained, rich, organic soils. Keep in mind that our LIFETIME PLANT GUARANTEE applies when you use these planting amendments. Our planting guide for container plants is available on our website or free in the nurseries. We recommend you follow these guidelines for insured success.
Now is also the time for the real warm weather lovers of the vegetable garden to get started. Melons,Okra,Squash and the like! Again be sure your soil is well prepared and you fertilize regularly! |
