We've been preaching a lot about using pre-emergent herbicides lately. Well what if you didn't,forgot,or didn't get it down in time? There are several solutions,depending on what type of weeds you have and where you have them. For those who have broadleaf weeds in a lawn, you should use Weed Out by ferti-lome. This product is designed to kill only broadleafs so it won't harm your desirable grasses. If you have weeds and or grass in a rock,gravel,or any non-lawn situation, Hi-yield Killzall is your answer. This is a nonselective herbicide so you want to make sure everything you spray it on is non desirable. The great part about this product is that it doesn't harm the soil, and you can replant without any effect. In fact the active ingredient has to be absorbed thru the foliage of the target weed/grass it has no activity in the soil at all. We also have "organic" herbicides that use citrus and other herb oils to kill. They are non selective so they will burn the foliage on any plant they touch-be careful what you use them on, they do work and they are safe to pets and kids. These three products will control most all of the unwanted weeds and grasses you'll find in your yard. There are a couple of other scenarios that would take too much time to cover, for instance nutgrass control, and we'll save those for a tip in a few weeks. The most important thing is to make sure the target weed/grass is properly identified so the correct product is used in the correct situation, and please follow mixing instructions. The next most important tip is to be sure you use Spreader Sticker with any weed or grass killers. These surfactants increase the effectiveness of your product. Be sure to use common sense and don't spray if it is windy or is going to rain within 24-48 hours of application. If done properly you should have great success in eliminating those unwanted pests from the yard.
