Feedin'Time
The weather is warming and most of the plants we grow here are wanting to put on new growth if they aren't already! You may have noticed the sub tropicals and tropicals (Hibiscus,Citrus, etc) are even losing some of their old growth or it is in the process of turning yellow and falling off. All the signs are there that your plants need fertilized. We have already mentioned in previous tips to feed Citrus , but often we neglect to inform you of all the others-sorry! So here is the list of plants that you should be fertilizing now!
- Your Winter lawn for the last time
- Hibiscus,Bougainvilleas,Lantanas,and Natal Plum
- All drought tolerant plants such as Texas Sage and Mexican Bird of Paradise
- Rose bushes if they have leaves
- Deciduous Fruit Trees if they have leaves
- Established Vegetable plantings
- All Evergreen Shade Trees and Deciduous Shade Trees if leaves are present
As you can see by the list it may have been easier to say what not to fertilize! Be sure to pick a fertilizer that is developed for our area-we like Ferti-lome and Organo brands as their analyses are specifically designed for our growing conditions, soils, and weather. Be sure to follow directions-more is not better! And never fertilize a dry plant (hard to do these days). Also be sure to water thoroughly after applying fertilizers, also hasn't been much of a problem lately! All in all there is not much you shouldn't be feeding now. All fertilizers work-but you must use them in order for that to happen. Don't delay we could have one of the most spectacular Springs in recent memory thanks to God, you just need to help a little!! |
