Genesis 2:15 tells us that God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it! The first thing that "mankind" is entrusted with is the garden. As we enter this season of Spring,Lent,Growth and Life are you ready to work and take care of the garden. If not we can help. Attend our Garden Club meeting every 3rd Saturday, come by and see us any day, have us out to your home, or visit our website(www.harpersnursery.com). Weekly Garden Tip
With the last average day of freezing behind us or nearly so, it is time to prune! If you have some tender plants that may have suffered some frost damage, or if you just want to rejuvenate the foliage and appearance, now is the time. Pruning frost damage plants is usually pretty self explanatory. The plant will show you where the new growth is coming out from and you can prune back to at least that point. This is also a good time to control the size of plants. Rather than the continuous shearing and shaping we see way too often in landscapes, a rather severe pruning this time of year will allow the plant to rejuvenate with new luxuriant foliage and if it is a plant that flowers you will not be continuously removing the blooming tips or wood from the plant and amazingly you'll have more and better flowers than ever before! The May Rule: If a plant flowers after May it is blooming on new growth and should be pruned in late winter or early spring before new growth occurs. If it flowers during Winter months (Cassia would be a good example) you should wait until it is done blooming to prune as it is blooming on last years growth! So sharpen the trimmers, and put on the gloves and let it fly!!
