Wow can you believe the weather?  We certainly needed the moisture and boy did we ever get what we needed, in a hurry! The moist ground and good ol' rain water is great for the garden and landscape!

Tomato Time
tomato plant
For many years the most successful tomato grower i knew was our maternal grandfather,Jay Vensel.  Grandpa Vensel grew tomatoes on the site of our Mesa nursery where he also lived. The ground in NE Mesa isn't very good in fact it is terrible, but by starting early(late January)and doing a good job of cultivating the soil, and planting his plants the last of January or the very first of February, Jay Vensel grew enough tomatoes to supply the whole family and we even had enough to go up and down the street in our neighborhood and sell them out of a little red wagon!  Obviously there are 2 keys to being successful growing tomatoes here. Timing-plant early, like right now, and soil preparation. We have a great free soil preparation guide available on line at www.harpersnursery.com or in the stores, and the tomato plants are ready and in the stores now!  I don't think variety is nearly that important.  Ask 10 tomato growers what they like best you'll get 6 different answers.  None of them do well if planted in poor soil and or too late!

.You know I'll be talking more about tomatoes on our weekly garden show Saturday at 8am on 92.3fm KTAR. Or you can catch all the garden tips by going to our website or www.rosieonthehouse.com They be can uploaded and listened to if you miss them!
I'll see you in the Garden!
