Healthy Meals.

MANNA meals modified for individual needs are an integral part of our clients' medical care.

The public is flooded with nutrition information and many of the guidelines are written and intended for healthy people. However, the generic nutrition guidelines and the Dietary Reference Intakes and Dietary Guidelines for healthy Americans do not always apply to our clients who are living with life-threatening illnesses.

The meal delivery program at MANNA is a comprehensive program that involves the evaluation of clients' nutritional needs for their current medical conditions. For example, medications and chemotherapy can have an effect on our clients' nutritional needs and tolerances. MANNA provides 13 different modifications to our meals for special needs clients and each meal can be personalized up to three modifications. MANNA offers modifications such as the yellow dot "soft diet;" useful with clients when chewing is a problem. The purple dot diet reduces the fiber and gaseous foods that may cause distress for our clients who have gastro-intestinal (GI) abnormalities. We also offer diets that reduce the levels of potassium and phosphorous for clients with kidney problems.

MANNA's dots code meal modifications for drivers and volunteers to deliver individualized care for
each of our clients.

MANNA clients are required to have nutrition consultations at least once every 6 months to monitor changes in nutrient needs as their medical conditions change. MANNA nutritionists strive to provide the most comprehensive nutrition care possible by working in conjunction with many dietitians and health care providers to ensure we have accurate health updates.

MANNA received a $500,000 grant for renovations of its commercial kitchens and administrative offices authorized by Governor Edward G. Rendell from Pennsylvania's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP).

State Representative Dwight Evans, chair of the House Appropriations Committee for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, assisted in acquiring the grant for MANNA's upcoming capital campaign project. Representative Evans presented a check to Barbara Kaplan, MANNA's Board Chair on Wednesday, April 18th.

"The RACP grant will be used as partial funding for the organization's capital project which includes renovations of commercial kitchens and administrative offices at MANNA," states MANNA's Chief Executive Officer Richard Keaveney. "Thanks to the Rendell Administration and State Representative Dwight Evans, MANNA is well on the way to raise $3,000,000 goal for the building's upcoming office and kitchen renovations."

At present, MANNA serves up to 900 clients on a daily basis but the community's needs are much greater. In order to expand its capacity to serve 1,500 people in need, MANNA is undertaking a $3 million campaign to fund both physical and programmatic changes including renovations for its facility, expansion of program services, addition of specialized delivery vehicles and the creation of an operating reserve fund. The RACP grant will help fund the facility renovations at 12 S. 23rd Street in Philadelphia.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure welcomed MANNA as a grantee for its grant period from April 1st, 2007 to March 31st, 2008. Funding for the "Meals and Nutrition Services for People with Breast Cancer" will be supported by the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help MANNA grow and have a greater impact on the Delaware Valley's breast cancer movement. The Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure provides funding to organizations that assist women fighting breast cancer.
