Catalyst09 Dear friend,,

Happy spring! We are feeling loved! We are thrilled to be selected Nonprofit of the Year by the Cambridge of Commerce! And we are delighted to have celebrated our 15th Anniversary and Catalyst Award Ceremony with more than 150 guests, parents, girls, and mentors in attendance last week!

I am also humbled to have been selected to be a Fellow of the Massachusetts Academy of Science for my contribution to science education, along with William Nye. (Yes, that's Bill, the Science Guy!!) Other luminaries in science include Mildred Dresselhaus, Lynn Margulis and Susan Lindquist. Wow! Thanks so much to Peg Riley for creating this great organization.

It's been a busy spring for our girls, my wonderful staff and our truly dedicated volunteers, as you can see in the left column. And before the summer program begins in July, we will host another reverse science fair next week at Mission Hill.

And please invite all the high school girls you know to come to SET in the City, an all-day, multi-venue exploration on Saturday, June 13th, to find out how science, engineering and technology is making a difference in the world and meet amazing women who are doing it. Details and pre-registration site

Congratulations to all our mentor-scientists, interns, friends, volunteers, and our girls who are graduating this year. We wish you the best.

Most gratefully,
Connie Chow

PresidentBottomlyMayorSimmonsInclusion of women and girls in science and engineering should not be based on luck, and the opportunity to explore is paramount, said Wellesley President Kim Bottomly in her opening address for our 15th Anniversary Celebration and Catalyst Award Ceremony on May 26th.

Mayor Simmons, City Councillor Fred Fantini and Tim Toomey (also a state rep) were able to share a few words during the reception about the need for programs like ours. Remarks from our Catalyst Awardees Dean Evelynn Hammonds and Dr. Lasrisa Schelkin emphasized the importance of mentors and networks in creating conditions for the success of girls and underrepresented groups.

Dr. Susan Bailey, who authored the AAUW research document that prompted the creation of Science Club for Girls, presented co-founders Beth O'Sullivan and Mary McGowan with a signed copy of "How schools shortchange girls" to commemorate the 15th year of our founding.

Scholarships honoring the co-founders' fathers were given to Eunice Rodriguez and Daniel' Gaines, who will be graduating high school this year.

GirlsWithColumnsOur girls charmed the attendees with their displays, introductions, and a video documentary, created by the Media Team in collaboration with PressPassTV.

Thanks to our event committee, especially Shayne Gilbert, honorary committee chair Dr. Lydia Villa-Komaroff and to our many event sponsors and auction item donors. In addition to creating many wonderful memories, we raised over $37,000 to support our programs!  Thank you so much for your support!
