BuildaBridge International Announces

City Hall Art Exhibit:

My Home is in My Heart: An Artistic Inquiry of Place, Home and Belonging by Philadelphia's Children

Join BuildaBridge and the Philadelphia community in celebrating the great accomplishments of children through their artwork. The exhibit will be hosted by the City of Philadelphia's Office of the Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, and The Art in City Hall Program. This event will take place on March 7-April 29, with an opening reception and celebration, March 31 from 5-7 PM. The exhibit will be located on the fifth floor of City Hall.

For many "home" is a place where memories are made--a place of safety, comfort and stability.  For children living in transitional housing throughout Philadelphia the hope of having a place to call home is a feeling and not yet a physical reality.  Committed to principles of love, compassion, justice, reconciliation, and service to others, BuildaBridge, a nonprofit arts education and intervention organization engages the transformative power of the arts  to bring hope and healing to children and their families in Philadelphia and in communities throughout the world . Through a holistic, arts-integrated approach to personal and community development, the BuildaBridge Discovery Program motivates, enlists and trains artists to provide students safe and structured environments where they can learn, heal and find hope for the future.  This exhibit highlights themes of Place, Home and Belonging through the perspectives of children in transitional housing through visual art, dance, creative writing, and photography.  The exhibit will run March 7 to April 29 with an opening reception March 31, showcasing the work of BuildaBridge's young artists  who illustrate bright hopes of realizing "Home" through performance art, dance, drumming and poetry.

Life of a Child in Haiti: Homelessness, Disease, Malnutrition

By: Mačva Renaud

Haiti Arts Relief and Development Coordinator

When I first met Modelin Charles at the Shalom Village Children's Home in Cap-Haitien, Haiti, he had malaria, anemia, worms, and nightmares. For a four year old, Modelin wasn't as active as the other children around him. He was distant, uncommunicative, and very sensitive. He either sat on a chair for most of the day or slept. At night we could hear him screaming from his nightmares. I often wondered how he was feeling and why his behavior was different from the others.  I knew his health wasn't up to par, his living situation- transitional, and mentally probably living in fear.

Discovery Fall Term ends in Celebration!

Mural

The Discovery Program this Fall began September 27 and served 123 children from seven transitional housing sites across the city.  Celebrations occurred the week of Dec. 6-10 where children showcased their work to parents, friends and siblings.  Each child received a certificate of completion for the class with the hopes that they will continue in January. This was a success with the help of seven teaching artists and seven volunteer classroom assistants.  Our winter term began in January with a total of ten teaching artists and sixteen volunteer assistants. Also our winter term added a visual arts class in replacement of African drumming, and a Poetry in Motion class, fusing creative writing, poetry, music and movement.

Reparando is a documentary on Guatemala's attempt to rise above a 36-year civil war. Athentikos presents 'Reparando', a documentary on Guatemala's struggle to repair itself and its people following a 36-year civil war.

The documentary follows Shorty, a pastor and former gang member, and Tita, who started a school in Guatemala's most notorious slum, as they join forces to invoke positive change and repair the country and its people.  BuildaBridge has worked with these change agents since 2006 through internships and arts-based service trips and camps, in partnership with Strategies for Transformation.   We take no credit here, but applaud and support their work. Those who have traveled to Guatemala with us will find this inspiring.

Constance Kocs

A passion for the arts, devotion to teaching, and a sense of compassion for the world are just a few things that describe Constance Kocs. Constance is an art professor at Pierce College which is located in Woodland Hills, California. Kocs is on sabbatical in Guatemala helping BuildaBridge transform the lives of children through art. She is working with Nancy Perez, a fellow BuildaBridge Institute alumni (2010), in the Guatemalan National Cemetery. The children that Kocs is working with will be involved in a visual arts project over the period of three months. Each child will be making a book of all of their artwork. At the end of the program, each of the children will have one page of artwork in a group art book which will give them a sense of community and a feeling of closeness with one another. These children are engaged in the art they are creating. Kocs reports that "
