Are you ready to make a difference?

Greetings!

In a few short months we will be returning to Haiti as part of our long term arts relief efforts.  We will also return to Kenya, Guatemala, and Nicaragua as part of our Diaspora of Hope.  Please consider these efforts as we continue to develop local capacity through both training and direct service. You can visit our website for more information about cost.  In order to help with fundraising we have planned several fundraising workshops.  The first workshop is Sunday afternoon, 26 September, 2010, 2:30 PM-5:30 PM at the BuildaBridge House in Philadelphia.  You'll need to RSVP to attend.

Even if you cannot participate in one of these experiences, we can still use your help in fundraising for Arts Relief.  Both Arts Relief Haiti and the broader Diaspora of Hope are intended to build local capacity.  Training local teachers and engaging local artists in serving the children of their communities is our goal.  These efforts go beyond our initial and ongoing service projects which serve as catalytic events for arts in local community development and sustainability.

Sincerely,

Dr. J. Nathan Corbitt
Return to Haiti

BuildaBridge will return to Haiti in November, 2010 as part of Diaspora of Hope.  We are continuing with catalyzing, capacity building and sustainable arts development with local organizations and artists. Participants will both teach and assist with a local elementary school and an orphanage.  At Madame Luc's Orphanage artists will continue the development of the child sacred space with sculpting, painting, drama and music classes, and introducing sack gardening.  Living conditions are very basic.  At the Luois Pierrot School we need five teaching artists. we will again provide an arts camp and are looking to engage more local artists as teachers.  Training is required and also provided at local sites.  Contact Rachel Windholz for more detailed information.

You can read reports from the artists who traveled to Haiti this summer.  You can also view videos of the experience on our Transforming Arts channel on Youtube.

Artists (music, dance, drama and visual arts) are still needed for Nicaragua & Kenya; training required for both.

Guatemala:  November 19-27
For the past six years BuildaBridge has assisted Strategies for Transformation and La Limonada School in developing an arts camp and programming for children living in an urban barrio.  The barrio has been riddled with gangs, drugs and violence.  The arts camp takes place at a beach camp.  Over 100 children are bused outside the barrio for a week-long camp of arts, sports and activities that focus on hope and peace-making.  Local artists are engaged with the goal of serving as primary teachers, with international teachers assisting and transferring skills.  Positions for this trip are now closed.

Kenya: November 27-Dec 5
This will be our third year working in conjunction with the Inspiration Center in Nairobi. We work with the children of Mathare Valley, Kibera, Olympic, and Dandora informal settlements. These neighborhoods are some of the toughest places in Africa where children have experienced abuse, civil unrest, hunger, disease, and extreme poverty. BuildaBridge Artists on Call work alongside local artists to teach approximately 20 children.

Nicaragua: November 27-Dec 5
This camp takes place in a peri-urban area outside of Managua in a community where children live near a graveyard and work in manual recycling of trash.  Sponsored by the Nehemiah center of Managua, there are local artists who have begun this well attended arts camp.  Spanish is not required, but recommended.  View a video about the camp produced by the Nehemiah Center.

A $350 deposit is required by October 1, 2010 to secure your place.  All participating artists are expected to raise money for the cost of the project.

Contact us for more information on each of these service opportunities.
