June 2010
Greetings!

It has been a fast, full and exciting June for BuildaBridge.  Plans are underway for our first project in Haiti.  We have just completed our 9th Annual Institute.  The Arts Relief Course was very helpful in preparing our Artists on Call for relief and development service.  Artology is just weeks away and help is needed.  Arts for Hope Camps in Montana are being planned.  Click on the links throughout to read our blogs about each program.  Consider supporting our Arts Relief projects in Haiti this summer.

Participants, faculty, and teaching artists gathered from as far away as Australia, Haiti, Guatemala, Scotland, Korea and around the United States to learn and share about arts in transformation.  For details read the BuildaBridge Institute 2010 blog.  Thanks to Henry Holcomb for maintaining this blog throughout the Institute.
Haiti Bound:  Arts Relief with Children

Children in Haiti
Children in Haiti
Our first projects in Haiti begin July 9 at the North Haiti Christian University where Dr. Nix-Early will be leading Arts Relief training to creative arts students and community service workers.  On July 15 two groups of artists and therapists will provide an arts camp in Ponte Sonde and arts-based activities and assessment in an orphanage near Port au Prince.  Consider supporting these important pilot programs in our long-term commitment to the people and children of Haiti.  Read more about our work as it develops on the Arts Relief Blog.  Click here to view and listen to children's songs at Ponte Sonde.

You can also help us raise funds for Haiti Arts Relief.  Consider conducting a fundraiser by organizing an event, becoming an ambassador, circulating a request to your friends.  If interested, contact Dr. J. Nathan Corbitt at ncorbitt@buildabridge.org for more information.  Artists raise their own funds and your help is needed.

Arts Relief and Psychological First Aid

Dr. Gene Behrens
Dr. Gene Behrens
BuildaBridge offered its first Arts Relief course on June 7.  Partnering with the Red Cross, over 40 participants received training in psychological first aid (PFA) from Dr. Ruth Hoskins. The PFA training was followed by practical arts intervention methods for trauma relief with Dr. Gene Behrens and Christine Wineberg.  Pictured here, Dr. Behrens provided some exciting music activities for dealing with emotional challenges in children.

Artology Summer Camp is just around the corner and WE NEED YOU!!!!

Each year, Artology focuses on a specific, environmentally-focused theme - this year at Artology, we'll be learning about the local watershed and water health through an exciting collaboration with the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership, Inc (TTF) in order to increase students' awareness of local environmental issues and authentically engage them in creating solutions.

BuildaBridge's Artology Summer Arts and Biology Camp Program is in need of a group of volunteers for various jobs throughout the summer.

The opportunities we need volunteers for are:
  • Recruitment
  • Registration
  • Classroom Prep
  • Before and After Camp Child Care
  • Clean-up at the end of the camp

Montana Bound

Montana Bound
Montana Bound
July 31- August 14.  This year, BuildaBridge returns for a second year to collaborate with local artists in Pablo, Montana working with the Salish and Kootenai confederated tribes. In addition, we will be adding a second week on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in the Southern part of Montana. On these reservations, visiting and local artists will collaborate to teach and encourage hope and healing with children and youth in communities that have experienced high rates of suicide, poverty, and drug and alcohol abuse. Cost is $1800 plus transportation to and from Montana.  We are inviting creative artists in all media along with creative arts therapists and educators.  We also invite non-artists. We need assistants.  You do have to love kids and possess creative spirit.  Contact rwilcox@buildabridge.org.  Read about our last experience on the Montana Blog.
