Month/Year
Greetings!

April brings warm weather, sunshine and a lot of planning underway at BuildaBridge.

Here is a list of programs underway:

Discovery programs in Philadelphia transitional housing look forward to celebrations in June.

The BuildaBridge Institute June 2-6, 2010 adds a new course in Arts Relief and Development on June 7.  Still time to register.  New graduate students in the Eastern University Arts in Transformation concentration of the M.A. in Urban Studies will begin their program of study.  This is the Institute's ninth year.  Over 350 people have benefited from quality and practical training in arts for transformation in the community context.  Contact Alina Tudose, Coordinator of the BuildaBridge Institute for more information or to register.

Artology in July will be better that ever with parents already registering for the arts, biology and environment camp in Philadelphia.  Volunteers, interns and faculty are still needed.  Charlene Melhorn,  Director of Artology and Artist-in-Residence, will be glad to answer questions about enrolling your children or being a part of the program.  Contact her by email.  You can read about the program featured in the Examiner.

Arts relief and development work in Haiti is underway with our site visit occuring this month, and a first relief and development trip scheduled for July.  Already 40 artists and therapists have completed the first steps of preparation.  If you would like to be a part of Artists on Call to Haiti and other international destinations served by BuildaBridge, contact  Dr. J. Nathan Corbitt.  This is a long-term commitment to the people of Haiti and the organizations that serve them.  Our website will be up soon with detailed information about the project.

Summer Diaspora of Hope Arts camps in Montana and a new site in Georgia have been added.  Contact Rebekah Wilcox, Coordinator of Diaspora of Hope, if you are interested in participating in these arts camps with kids.

Here are some ways you can get involved:

Working directly with kids:
  1. Intern with Artology in Philadelphia
  2. Become a part of a Diaspora of Hope camp with the Northern Cheyenne and Salish and Kootenai in Montana; or, work with refugee children in Stone Mountain, Ga.
  3. Ask about our new drama program with unaccompanied youth
  4. Intern in Nairobi, Kenya for three months working with kids and networking artists.
  5. Intern in Malaysia for one to three months working with street kids
  6. Intern in Philadelphia with Orange Corner Arts at the Ayuda Community Center
Helping BuildaBridge Grow:
  1. Be a part of the Summer Dream Team Internship Program.  While most interns have already been selected, there is room for people with specific skill sets
  2. Assist with the BuildaBridge Institute as an intern or volunteer.  There are needs for marketing, planning and implementation in June.  We are even looking for nannies to help with some child care.
  3. Technical expertise is especially needed in story writing, social marketing, photography, database management, and development.
For general questions about getting involved in any of these efforts contact Karen Vaccaro, BuildaBridge Programs and Projects Administrator.

We've included other information below.  As always, thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Nathan

All Things BuildaBridge
An Evening of Training

All Things BuildaBridge Artists in Training
All Things BuildaBridge
Diversity, energy and a willingness to serve characterized sixteen new volunteers at 'All Things BuildaBridge' Training on March 18th.  I marveled at the stories each volunteer told as they reached out, stories like that of the young lady who struggled in school "until I took up acting and took off."  "Gee, we do that", I said to myself.

The course was a refresher for me - and an eye opener - after four years as a BuildaBridge volunteer.  In addition to hundreds of kids BuildaBridge serves in Philadelphia homeless shelters, the Diaspora of Hope in the Fall reaches hundreds more in Guatemala, Haiti, Kenya and other tough spots.  BuildaBridge could not do it without volunteers.
My message:  Volunteer if you can and, right now, DONATE.

Artology Coming!
Artology: an art/biology/ecology day camp that transforms summer learning into fun!
by Mharlyn Merritt (the Examiner)
Artology
Artology
Some kids like art but not science and some kids like science but not art. What if there was a way to combine the two into a unique summer art camp experience for Philadelphia children with limited resources; there is and it's called Artology. The camp combines methods of art and science to teach young people about conservation, environment responsibility and creative ways of recycling.

Young participants have access to the wonderful natural resources offered by the city of Philadelphia and they are able to learn about the environment and how "trash" can be transformed into art.

Day of Healing
BuildaBridge and Art-Reach provide a Day of Healing for Service Providers
by Kim Magyar
Music, dance, culinary arts and chair massage provided service workers a chance to relax and reflect
Day of Healing
On February 19, 2010 BuildaBridge and Art-Reach teamed up to host an event called 'Day of Healing' which is offered to service providers working within shelters and transitional homes. The event was designed to show appreciation for these hard working individuals by giving them an opportunity to create art and indulge in a chair massage. Though it was anticipated that the guests of honor would experience play and relaxation, it was an unexpected gift to learn that some guests had a more profound experience.
Diaspora of Hope and Arts Relief
Travel and Serve this Summer
by Rebekah Wilcox
Culinary arts in Montana
Culinary Arts
In 2009, 29 artists traveled to 5 cities around the globe, joining 39 local artists and staff, to bring hope and healing to children living in the toughest places in the world. BuildaBridge artists were joined by local artists in each country as they planned, trained and implemented arts camps on the themes of hope, peace, and unity. This year, you are invited to join us as we expand our Diaspora of Hope to different locations throughout the summer and into the fall 2010. Artists on Call (all volunteers) can register online, be trained online and on-ground to prepare for service. Courses include Arts Relief, the BuildaBridge Classroom, and basic curriculum.  We need lead teachers and assistants in music, dance, drama, visual arts, mural-making and other art forms.  Spanish is a plus for Central America. Creative Arts therapists are most welcome at each site, and especially in Haiti.

International

Kenya: December 10-19. This is our third year working with the Inspiration Centre and the kids of Mathare Valley in Nairobi.  Work with the children of Mathare Valley, Kibera, Olympic, and Dandora. These neighborhoods are some of the toughest places in Africa where children have experienced abuse, civil unrest, hunger, disease, and extreme poverty.

Nicaragua: November 19-28.  Spend a week serving kids from two peri-urban communities in Chinandega, about two hours away from Managua. In Conjunction with the Nehemiah Center, you will work with children in the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. This is a great opportunity to serve children who are exposed to daily abuse, have high rates of drug use and are often ignored by society.

Guatemala: November 19-28.  Join us for a week on a beach camp in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala to work with children from La Limonada, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Guatemala. In conjunction with the Center for Transforming Mission in Guatemala, artists will travel by bus from Guatemala City to the ocean community of Puerto Barrios for a 5-day Hope inspired arts camp. This is our fifth year of working with La Limonada. The camp will be expanded to include children from other organizations working in Guatemala City.

Haiti: July (Dates TBD), November 19-28.  Plans are still in progress for these service trips and will be available after our site visit in April 17-22.

United States

Montana.  July 31-August 14.  Join two camps with kids from the Northern Cheyenne and Salish and Kootenai tribes.

Stone Mountain, Ga.  July 9-15.  Work with refugee children from around the world who have been resettled in the US.

Philadelphia:  Week of November 26.  Join our Philadelphia artists as they provide special programming in the homeless shelters.

Harrisburg, PA:  Week of November 26.  Join our Harrisburg-based staff in programming for kids in the State capital.

Cost

There are set prices for each region of the world to cover housing, food, land transportation, insurance, site fees, local materials costs, translators and incidental expenses.  At present costs are rising and would be comparable to travel in the US.  Airfare to and from site are NOT included.  Haiti prices are fluctuating.  Based on current rates:
Central America & the Caribbean $1800 (Haiti); Kenya  $2400; US $1800.  A $350 non-refundable deposit is required.  All fees must be paid 45 days before the Diaspora of Hope trip.  No refunds are issued after that time.
