Three New Staff Members Join BuildaBridge!
|
Welcome Americorps VISTA Volunteers
On August 17,
BuildaBridge recruited a different kind of volunteer-Volunteers In
Service To America, or less formally known as AmeriCorps VISTA's. This is
our third and, potentially, final year working with VISTA's, but if this is
indeed the end of our VISTA years, we are going out with a bang as we welcome
three new VISTA's to our Germantown home.
Charlotte Castle,
Volunteer Coordinator, is a 2009 graduate of the College of Wooster. She is a painter and has used her travels to Malawi to perform
HIV/AIDS work as inspiration for her most recent series of paintings. Development Associate, Mharlyn Merritt has an impressive
resume that possesses a wide variety of professional, artistic, and volunteer
experiences. In her free time, Mharlyn
writes neo-noir thrillers. Kim Jupinka, Project Assistant, proves to have an eye for detail as she once
worked as a Forensic Photo/Video Technician at her county sheriff's department
within the Criminalistic Investigations Unit.
Our new VISTA's are a diverse trio whose unique and sometimes bizarre,
life experiences make for a strong, effective team that BuildaBridge is
thrilled to welcome!

BuildaBridge's Participation in the National Day of Service
The recent death of Senator Edward M. Kennedy makes the implementation of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act
, signed into law by President Obama in April 2009, more than a
landmark piece of legislation. It stands as a testimony to the man
himself, whose life though privileged was dedicated to public service.
It was his brother, President John F. Kennedy who declared at his
inauguration: "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you
can do for your country."

International Service Opportunities

Diaspora of Hope
November 20-28, 2009 Guatemala, Nicaragua, Kenya, and Egypt
Four great opportunities for international arts service this November! Still time and space to join Diaspora of Hope.
BuildaBridge
International is calling all artists, teachers, and students who care
about kids and want to participate in a Diaspora of Hope in one of 4
locations this November: Guatemala, Nicaragua, Kenya, and Egypt.
Artists will work in teams with local volunteers to lead children and
youth arts camps on the theme of Arts for Hope. Ten artists are
needed to complete each team. Language skills a plus--but not
required (Arabic, Spanish, and Swahili).
The
set curriculum teaches about the will-power and way-power of hope
through creative art-making in visual, drama, music, dance and other
art forms. US/International Teams will include 5-10 volunteers. A
local team, mirroring this ratio, will also be established at the
national site serving 50-100 youth. Training is required prior to
travel and on-site with local team. Curriculum is provided, with
on-line training options.

BuildaBridge in Montana
|
Big Sky Country
In early August BuildaBridge International went to Montana, Big Sky
Country, to build cultural bridges on the Flathead Indian Reservation
with children from the Salish and Kootenai American Indian tribes. The
trip started with us taking in most, if not all, of the natural wonders
that great state had to offer. We spoke with professors, scholars, and
politicians in an effort to learn about American Indian history and
culture. But none of that really made sense until we were staying on
the reservation and working with the chidren. What was left, at least
with me, was a different interpretation of what the phrase "Big Sky
Country" can and could mean...
