The International program has recently
posted the upcoming service opportunities for 2009. You can join us in Eastern Europe
on a 17-day gospel tour and arts camp this summer. Or, you can stay "stateside" and
learn about American Indian culture while working with children from
the Salish and Kootenai tribes of Flathead Lake in Montana. And, for our third year, you can join us during Thanksgiving week for our Diaspora of Hope to Kenya, Guatemala, Nicaragua, South Africa, Egypt, and others to come. This page is updated regularly as new requests come in, so check back often!!

What Do You Want to be When You Grow Up?
Most of us remember being asked as kids, "What do you want
to be when you grow up?" Like many other young people, I struggled to
imagine a future that seemed so distant, so abstract. I learned to give
pat answers that elicited a positive response from adults. "I want to
be a teacher..."

Discovery Program

Art Class at the Oak Lane Diner
After spending months learning drawing skills and the principles of
art, students from the Second Baptist Church of Germantown Discovery
Program are taking their skills outside! On Thursday, students packed up their sketchbooks and pencil sets and
headed out to he locally revered Oak Lane Diner. Their on-site
assignments included gesture drawings of people, contour drawings of
interior spaces, and pattern collection. The Diner bustled with energy...

BuildaBridge Institute

Participate in the Institute 2009
The 2009 BuildaBridge Institute
taking place at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, PA during June 3-7 has
extended its early registration fee (at $500) to May 25, the last day
to register.
BuildaBridge Institute
is a training institute and applied research academy designed to
prepare practitioners to integrate the arts effectively in education
and community development.

Opportunity Programming
|
Money News Network Begins
BuildaBridge's drama based financial literacy training program, Money News Network (MNN),
started on March 24 at the Drueding Center/Project Rainbow in North
Philly. The training is six weeks long and is attended by 22 Project
Rainbow residents.
The Money News Network, a life skills training program of Opportunity,
teaches financial management through drama.

| Seeds of Freedom Friday May 1st
|
Art Show to Open at Infusion Coffee and Tea
Germantown/Mt. Airy: BuildaBridge
and Infusion Coffee and Tea will be hosting a public art exhibition, "Seeds
of Freedom," opening Friday, May 1, 2009 from 7 to 9 pm. The show
will feature 2-dimensional art works (painting, drawing, photography and mixed
media) created by school-aged students from BuildaBridge's emergency housing
partner sites in West Philadelphia.

IDignity Moves to Harrisburg
|
IDignity Art Opening and Reception
BuildaBridge is excited to announce our second showing of IDignity from April 26th- May 9th.
The show will exhibit artwork from local and international artists that
highlight the dignity and value of those who are faced with social,
economic, and physical hardships here in the United States and abroad. This show will be held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at the St. Stephen's Mission Gallery at 221 North Front Street.

BuildaBridge Awarded Grant from US Airways Corporate Giving Program
BuildaBridge's Discovery program was awarded a $5,000 grant from US Airways Corporate Giving Program. Discovery partners with emergency and transitional housing sites to provide arts-integrated education in multiple art mediums (dance, drama, visual art, music, culinary arts and creative writing).
With these funds, BuildaBridge will be able to continue providing services to homeless and low-income children and families in Philadelphia while systematically improving the quality of these services.

| The Lincoln Financial Foundation Awards Grant for Artology Artology
2009 will be made possible, in part by a grant from the Lincoln
Financial Foundation. Artology is BuildaBridge's multi-disciplinary art
and science summer camp. Led by professional artists and graduate
medical students, this program integrates scientific learning and
discovery with artistic expression. Artology serves children who are
coping with homelessness providing them with a safe, educational and
inquisitive environment to explore nature and the arts.

Fox Chase Charitable Foundation Awards Grant for BuildaBridge Institute
BuildaBridge is excited to announce that the organization has
received a grant award from Fox Chase Charitable Foundation for the
2009 Institute. This annual training institute and research academy is
geared towards all professionals and community workers who want to
better serve those in need by learning how to integrate the arts in
education and community development.
