2nd Annual 5th Grade vs. Faculty Basketball Game ROUND UP
CONGRATULATIONS 5th Grade on the big 64-62 win! You were awesome - we are so proud of the amazing teamwork and focus you brought to the task, not to mention the victory you brought home for the 5th graders. One 5th Grader noted "We outscored last year's 5th grade by 10 points - we were ON FIRE!"
LOTS OF THANK YOUs NEEDED
The most important thank you goes out to our sublime principal Dr. Steve Goodwin for being so amazing and inspiring to all of us (he had a couple good layups too!) and to the staff who came out on a school night and played their hearts out. A great big thanks to the whole Sprague Community that came out to cheer and support our school!
And of course many thanks to the tons of parents that made this happen:
- Championship Coaches Margaret Lyne, Jim Bergquist and their team--Lorelie King, Matt King, John Maggioni, Meir Segal, Tom Rosenbloom, Laura Hartnett, Phyllis Theermann, and Amy Kolb;
- Choreographer Beth Smith for organizing 67 5th graders into such an amazing half time show;
- Laurie Diamond and her team of Sprague Alumni that "refreshed" the record crowds with food and drink;
- Ted Wayman who wowed us once again with his great announcing, assisted by alum Charlie King;
- Maura Wayman for being team photographer extraordinaire;
- Eric Churchill for precision clock management under great pressure from both teams' coaches and players;
- Rock-n-Rollers Clint Sours and Haig Tellalian for providing, setting up and hauling away the great sound system;
- Ken Johnson who became our clutch last minute go-to guy and keeper of the WMS keys;
- A special shout out to alum Max Wickersham for DJing the game and mixing the special tunes for the halftime show;
- And last but not least, all those parents that showed up and helped out where there was a need!
Wow! Thanks to the collective efforts of the Sprague community, we have 127 pajamas to contribute to the Cradles to Crayons PJ Drive. We will be collecting new pajamas throughout the month of February. If you have not yet contributed or you would like to bring in additional jammies, we would love to add yours to the pile! We've been told that we are in a very close race with our friends at the Fiske school in Wellesley. Let's show everyone that Sprague has HEART!
A huge thanks to the Cahaly, Sullivan, Marvan, Mirick, Greene, Giroux, Aufranc, Kor, Garber, Groark, Barker, Glass, Murphy, Adler-Lazzarino, Poresky, Hawkins, Kim, Bergquist, Foley, Audi, Connaghan, Arronte, Bender, Davidson, Awdeh, Berg, Collins, Schiller, Heath, Cameron, Rodino and Person families for providing delicious dishes for our Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday. A special thanks to our Walk to School volunteers--Eileen Buckham, Catherine Mirick, Teresa Matias and Mary Crown. Kudos to our Spirit Shop volunteers Kirsten Stevenson and Suzanne Fletcher.

Wellesley Free Library ESL Through a generous grant from the Fund for Wellesley, the Wellesley Free Library is coordinating an ESL learning program for people who live and work in Wellesley whose first language is not English. Program activities include English classes, conversation classes, writing classes and individual tutoring and social events. Plans for the future may include citizenship classes, and conversation class leadership training.
We are very interested in hearing from both potential students and potential volunteers. More information is available by contacting Philippa Biggers, Program Coordinator, at 781-591-1247 or at wellesleyESL@minlib.net.
Wellesley Chapter of Neighbor Brigade
Individuals and families can suddenly find their world upended by a serious medical condition or other tragedy that can create an enormous emotional and physical burden on one or more persons in the family as they assume the role of caregiver. To address this need, Wellesley Friendly Aid has joined forces with Neighbor Brigade working together to organize neighborhood volunteers to provide meals, rides and other non-medical support to Wellesley neighbors in acute need. Neighbor Brigade (neighborbrigade.org) is a Massachusetts based, non-profit organization created to transform local communities into ready-made networks of support where neighbors are quickly mobilized to help other neighbors during times of crisis. It currently has 26 chapters serving communities in Massachusetts. Wellesley Friendly Aid established a chapter of Neighbor Brigade to serve Wellesley residents in 2011. This program provides support to caregivers and their families who are in a temporary crisis as a result of a family member dealing with a serious illness or recuperating from major surgery or sudden accident, and are challenged by day to day non-medical tasks. Friendly Aid has a group of dedicated volunteers to provide temporary support to such families using the Lotsa Helping Hands website to coordinate family needs and volunteer support services. Typical tasks that would be performed by volunteers would be: providing weekly meals; providing rides to local medical appointments; dog walking; running local errands (short grocery lists, prescriptions, etc.); and performing light yard work. We invite Wellesley residents (age 18 and over) interested in volunteering for this program or learning more about it to contact Karen Mondell, Program Administrator, at 781-235-3960 or wellesleyfriendlyaid@verizon.net. Transportation Options Project for Senior Citizens The Wellesley Council on Aging is proud to announce the Transportation Options Project, a grant-funded program for Senior Citizens living in Wellesley. The goal of the Project, funded by the Massachusetts Office of Elder Affairs and Springwell, is to educate Wellesley Seniors, their family members, caregivers and other interested individuals on the many transportation options available to Seniors living in Wellesley. The ultimate goal is for individuals to be better educated about transportation options and to make well informed decisions on how to access these options for the places Seniors need and want to get to. Information sessions will be held throughout the year. Contact Sandra Boris-Berkowitz, Transportation Options Coordinator at sbberkowitz@wellesleyma.gov or call the Wellesley Council on Aging at 781-235-3961 for a schedule of information sessions or if you are interested in having Sandy come and present at your organization. If you are unable to attend a scheduled information session, individual information sessions can be arranged.
