Munger Construction was recently featured in the Varco Pruden Builders Spotlight for the Summer 2012 issue of the VP Insights publication.  Munger's long term builder relationship with VP Buildings was highlighted.  Read our press release.

The Connecticut Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority has  approved Munger Construction to their limited list of Contractors able to sell and install RESIDENTIAL SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS in Connecticut. With this designation, Solar by mungergreen can now provide these important energy solutions, and convey to Connecticut residents the extremely generous State rebates for residential solar.  Currently the rebate is $2.25 per watt for the first 5,000 watts. This rebate, coupled with tax incentives and self-generation of electricity provides a long-term win-win for energy independence as well as an attractive investment for residential owners.

Green Update
Solar by mungergreen
Basking In The Sun!
Our Renewable Energy Division is gearing up to commence Solar Electric (PV) projects in a big way based on results of Connecticut's first Solar ZREC market offered by utility

companies, CL&P and the UI Company.

What are ZREC's you ask? Zero Emission Renewable Energy Certificates, (pronounced "Z- wrecks") which represent the "green attributes" of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from Solar Energy. These accumulate over the period of one year, and their value (under the CT program) is paid to you in quarterly checks from CL&P or UI at a fixed rate for fifteen (15) years! ZREC's are intended to promote the growth of distributed Solar electric generation by shortening the return on investment time frame. As an example, an average 100KW Solar system will pay its owners $20,000 per year in ZREC payments for 15 years. Oh, by the way you also get to keep the electricity generated by this solar array on your roof, estimated value = $15,000. The Connecticut ZREC program is currently the best solar program in the USA. This is a unique opportunity for any building owner or business owner in CT to invest in Solar which currently offers unprecedented tax credits and firm, long term Utility payments to incentivize. The financial pro forma of Solar is a worthwhile use of 30 minutes of your time to understand the value and cash-flow this can bring to your business.

CL&P had 296 applications for "large and medium tranche" Solar of which 84 were selected to be funded.  There is still time to take advantage of the "small solar" ZREC offering by mid-September 2012, space is limited.

Success Stories

Gaylord Solar Recently Munger teamed up with Consulting Engineering Services (CES) and the Legacy Mechanical Group (LMG) to provide design-build services for the installation of 70 solar thermal collectors for Gaylord Hospital's solar thermal hot water project. Located in Wallingford, CT, Gaylord Hospital is the first hospital in CT to receive state funding through a grant from the CT Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) for a solar thermal hot water system.

The solar thermal collectors work off sunlight (as opposed to heat) to form a thermos effect where the evacuated tubes are generally not affected by fluctuating outside temperatures. Even in extreme cold temperatures the collectors will produce 160 degrees Fahrenheit of water temperature. The rooftop panels will feed into a 3,750-gallon storage tank from which hot water will be distributed throughout the building. This system will reduce the annual hot water needs of the hospital by an estimated 65%.

This spring, Gaylord Hospital was recognized as an honoree in the 2012 CT Green Business Awards for this solar project. Munger Construction congratulates Gaylord Hospital on this award and applauds their dedication to energy efficiency, now setting the example for healthcare facilities across CT. Roses for Autism On April 24, 2012, Munger Construction proudly attended the dedication ceremony for the newly renovated retail space for the Growing Possibilities - Roses For Autism facility, located on Pinchbecks' Rose Farm in Guilford. Established by William Pinchbeck in 1929 and run by the family for 80 years, Pinchbeck's Rose Farm is a Guilford institution. Roses for Autism was the inspiration of a father with a teen with autism searching to provide a meaningful job and continued opportunity for growth for his son. Roses for Autism teamed up with Pinchbeck's Rose Farm to provide employment opportunities surrounding the cultivating, and selling of roses for people on the autism spectrum.

Munger worked closely with Noyes-Vogt Architects to design and complete a 1600 SF, wood framed, handicap accessible addition to the existing facility. This new space allows the program to improve operations and increase rose production by expanding the retail facility, creating greater packing room space, improving greenhouse efficiency, and providing a classroom environment for individuals who participate in the organization's career training program.

"The challenge was to meet the Town of Guilford's historical aesthetic requirements, create a low maintenance exterior, construct a roof line that blended with the existing structure, and to complete the project within an aggressive four month window." (Project Manager, Roy Lamberton)

Roses for Autism is the first business endeavor for Growing Possibilities providing the opportunity for people on the autism spectrum to learn transferable skills that will lead to successful employment. All proceeds from the rose sales are reinvested back into Roses for Autism in order to serve more people in the vocational training and employment program.

Munger is honored to provide construction services to support Roses for Autism's mission. Read more about this success story.
Work in Progress

Greenleaf Munger Construction was selected to build the largest biodiesel facility in New England. Greenleaf Biofuels, LLC, located at 100 Waterfront Street, New Haven, in the New Haven Terminal, will annually produce over 10 million gallons of biodiesel, a cleaner burning renewable energy source made from used cooking oil and other types of recycled vegetable oil and animal fats.

Munger Construction worked with Greenleaf Biofuels to select the right waterway location for their new facility, and is performing sitework and construction of an 8,000 SF, Varco Pruden pre-engineered steel building, along with the infrastructure to support tank farm equipment and utilities. The goal is to have the plant converting fuel by the fall of 2012. Read our press release.

North Haven Sanitation North Haven's Department of Public Works desired to move from an off-site rental facility to a facility owned outright by the Town of North Haven in an effort to consolidate operations personnel and sanitation equipment in a single location. Currently Munger Construction is constructing a 5,000 SF, Varco Pruden, pre-engineered steel building with a series of overhead doors, associated utilities, retaining wall, paving and associated line striping for a new sanitation equipment storage building.

Munger overcame challenging soil conditions by using "flowable fill lean concrete," a strong, but liquid medium that holds the foundation at a certain level to avoid settlement. This enables a safe work environment for a 16-foot deep area that needed to be re-excavated.

This is the third time during the past two years that Munger has had the opportunity to work for the Town of North Haven under the state's Capital Region Council of Government's (CRCOG) ezIQC program. CRCOG bid efficiencies benefit both town managers and procurement managers. Read our press release.

Jeff Landon came to Munger Construction from one of the premier residential building contractors along the eastern shoreline. Landon and Hall Building Contractors developed through three generations of fine craftsman ship, representing a benchmark in the industry. After a difficult decision was made to liquidate the business Munger was not interested in attaining their tools and equipment. Munger was interested in the real value of the company, the personnel, Jeff Landon.

That is how Jeff came to be a part of the Munger team and he has proven his value since day one. Jeff seamlessly transitioned into Munger Construction, bringing a well developed skill set and wealth of construction experience with him. His high level of skill and strong work ethic are exceptional. He also has a "calming" personality. Add all this together and it is obvious why Jeff is a competent project foreman.

Jeff and his family reside in Guilford. In his free time Jeff enjoys camping with his family, most recently at Hammonasset Beach State Park. His favorite pastime is fishing. Jeff enjoys salt water fishing, fresh water fishing, fishing from a boat, fishing from the shore, fishing, fishing, fishing!!! And yes, he does enjoy preparing and eating his fresh catch of the day.

Regardless of the challenge presented, Jeff remains an enthusiastic asset to the Munger team. In November Jeff will mark his fifth year here. We applaud his 5 years of dedicated service and look forward to many more years to come. Thanks Jeff!!!

Thank You for reading The Quarterly. We hope that you find the content to be timely, appropriate and beneficial. Your feedback is always welcome.
