Message From The President

David's Picture

Yes it is SPRING!!!  Everything is beginning to turn green and so are we.  You have probably already noticed the "Green" in our newsletter, both literally with the color green, and the focus of the articles throughout this issue.  There is so much to talk about I could not fit it all into my President's Message.

The Company News section outlines the process of installing Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on the roof of our corporate office building, and both the Recent Success Stories and Work-In-Progress sections provide details about sustainable energy projects we are involved with. All of these systems were partially paid for by grants from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund and Munger Construction has the resources to assist you in the process of securing grants when they become available.  Sadly, there is no money left in the grant programs at this time.  Munger Construction is currently working on the legislative front, traveling to Hartford to speak with law makers and fighting for the continuation of some form of grant program.  We are passionate about this and will not sit back and watch Connecticut let this program slide.

Both North Haven Auto Body and Munger Construction also worked closely with the Bank of Southern Connecticut to secure loans to fund our solar installations.  The Bank of Southern Connecticut is dedicated to supporting small businesses in Connecticut. Munger Construction and the Bank of Southern Connecticut can assist you in putting together financing packages for your specific sustainable energy projects.

Munger Construction has always focused on establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial business relationships with our customers.  We take great pride in the number of long term customer relationships we have developed.  This carries right through to our new green initiative as shown by the commitment to go "green" from repeat customers Van Wilgen's Garden Center, Massey Properties, North Haven Auto Body, and William Hitchcock.  We thank these loyal customers and challenge you to consider going "green" as well.  The return on your investment will be significant.  Why not share the enthusiasm and "energy" generated from going "GREEN?"

Sincerely,

David A. DeMaio, President, LEED AP

Munger Construction
Munger Solar
Yes we are up and running with our PV Solar panels on the roof of our corporate office in Branford.  We began installation of the panels in mid October 2009 and received final approval from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund to place our system on line as of December 17, 2009.  During the first month of operation our system covered 70% of our electrical use in the office and shop.  This solar system will generate enough energy to off-set the power used by approximately 2 homes a year, and from Dec, 17, 2009 until the end of March 2010 our system has avoided the generation of 0.62 tons of CO 2. (roughly the equivalent of preserving 130 trees).

The kiosk we have set up in our lobby provides on-going, current information regarding the solar benefits from our individual system.  If you can't make it into our office but would like to review the energy being produced or carbon mitigation, we invite you to become our "Solar Guest" by going to mypvdata.com.  Once on this site hit the "Log In" tab, type in our user name:

Recent Success Stories

Massey Properties
1 Commercial Street
When Munger Construction decided to make a serious commitment to exploring feasible solutions to protect the environment by utilizing renewable energy, long time customer, Robert Massey, Jr, from Massey Properties and Massey's Plate Glass and Aluminum, did not hesitate to jump on board.  Recently we completed a solar energy project for Massey by installing photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on the roof of the Massey Properties building located at 750 East Main Street, in Branford.  This 12.6 kilowatt system went on line in December 2009.  Their lifetime solar energy generated since Dec. 2009 is approximately 2.70 mega-watt hours (MWh).   Once again, Bob Massey's confidence in our company has resulted in another mutually beneficial business venture and this time it is also helping to conserve energy.

Van Wilgens Garden Center, North Branford
Geothermal energy system
Repeat customer, Bill Van Wilgen from Van Wilgen's Garden Center in North Branford has always strived to add environmentally friendly features to his business.  In 2009 Van Wilgen's decided to integrate a closed loop water-to-water geothermal HVAC system.  This system uses the earth's stable temperature to shed heat in the summer and gain heat in the winter with no waste water.  Munger Construction was responsible for this project which is the largest commercial space geothermal application in the area. Because geothermal systems work underground you cannot see it at work.  However, this geothermal system does not only help the environment but will also pay for itself in 5-6 years, with an expected life greater than 30 years.  We applaud Van Wilgen's for taking the initiative to pursue this sustainable energy solution for their business.

Not ready to commit to a large "green" construction project?  That's fine because there are many other ways to reduce energy usage and energy costs. Long time customer, Bill Hitchcock from William E. Hitchcok III Company, has worked closely with Munger Construction to reduce energy loss through the roof of his early 1900's rental property on Meadow Street in Branford.  With the help of partner, E.J. Davis Company, Munger designed and installed a thermal insulation system for the almost 10,000 SF of roof area on his industrial building.  Bill and his tenants realized significant reduction in energy costs as well as increased reflectivity of light off of the new white vapor barrier of insulation.  The greatly improved interior lighting and insulation upgrade are sure to increase the value of this property.
Work in Progress

When you think of companies that are committed to preserving the environment through the use of sustainable energy options the first company that comes to mind might not be a company involved with automobiles.  However,
North Haven Auto Body, located at 281 Washington Avenue in North Haven, is going "Green."

Owner, Robert McSherry, takes the responsibility of utilizing sustainable energy very seriously.  Currently Munger Construction is installing a 68 kilowatt, roof mount PV system, consisting of 215 solar modules on the south facing slope of their building. This is our largest solar project to date.

Once again, Munger Construction has partnered with Spire Solar to undertake this project.  Spire Solar is a solar vendor that provides products, design, and installation support. This will be the third solar project that we have partnered with them to complete in the past 4 months.

It is projected that this project will totally pay for itself within the next 5 to 7 years.  That is a noteworthy rate of return.  We commend Bob for his commitment to preserving the environment and his continued confidence in Munger Construction.

Employee Spotlight

In keeping with our "green" theme this issue we would like to spotlight Frank Sacramone, Jr.  Frank is our Business Development Manager and Corporate Counsel.  As Director of Business Development, Frank is continually seeking new and exciting business opportunities for Munger Construction.  Hence he was charged with the task of putting direction to going "GREEN".

Frank developed a company Green Initiative outline, became LEED AP certified, researched clean energy grant opportunities, developed a business relationship with Spire Solar for our solar projects, and works on the legislative front to promote sustainable energy programs and funding.  Frank is the go-to person when it comes to going "green."  He works closely with David DeMaio and also reaches out to network with architects, designers, customers, and new clients.

Frank lives in Bethany with his wife and two children (when they are not away at college).  Frank and his wife enjoy supporting both children's musical interests and talents by attending a variety of their musical productions and activities.  This keeps him pretty busy but he still finds time to pursue his interest in the great outdoors.  Frank enjoys going to his brother's house in Maine where at least two generations of his family meet to hunt, fish, cook and eat "hearty -man" meals, and swap their stories.  Frank also enjoys salt water fishing on his boat the Tessa Rose.  And.. you might also find him making homemade wine with David DeMaio as part of the "Brothers of the Vintage".

Frank is a conscientious, hard working individual who has worked closely with David to promote a company "Green Initiative" throughout the past 2 years.  His contributions have helped shape our commitment to energy efficiency into the ability to provide our customers with feasible options and sustainable energy solutions for their businesses.  Any further questions????  Just ask our "Green Czar," Frank Sacramone and he will be happy to assist you.  Thanks Frank!!
