Metal Buildings Receive Stamp of Approval

While reviewing some literature I received recently I was encouraged to read an article outlining the "stamp of approval" placed on metal buildings. A metal building system is an integrated set of components and assemblies that form a building. It includes roof and wall sheeting, purlins, girts, frames, columns, and accessories.

Design flexibility is one of the main benefits of metal building systems. Design-Build metal building systems are pre-engineered to exact customer specifications. Sophisticated metal building systems can readily incorporate aesthetically appealing exteriors, such as glass, wood, stucco, brick and stone. This results in versatile structures ranging from creating dramatic effects, to quietly blending in with their surroundings.

Metal Buildings can also be expanded and/or converted easily as customer needs change. For example, removing an end wall, erecting new framework and adding matching wall and roof coverings can result in a time efficient, cost effective addition to an existing metal building.

Industry experts estimate that one may save up to 30% in construction costs on metal buildings, depending on the project. Cost savings begin in the planning stages where frame, roof, and wall components are designed to exact owner specifications using advanced computer methods. Pricing is more accurate because of metal building system standardization. Contractors and customers know the specific costs from the outset thus reducing budget pressures that may occur.

A large portion of the construction of metal buildings takes place almost immediately, reducing project time and costs. Metal buildings can be put up in weeks vs. the months required for conventional building materials and methods. In addition, metal buildings have long-term value as they won't rot, warp or be prone to insect infestation. They are corrosion and fire resistant, durable and energy efficient.

Munger Construction is an authorized Varco-Pruden Builder. Varco-Pruden is one of the largest metal building systems manufacturers in the world, producing the most well designed, highest quality, most efficient commercial and industrial buildings available. We have developed a positive business relationship with Varco-Pruden throughout the past 13 years.

Modern metal building systems have proven to be an attractive alternative for the cost-conscious building owner. If you would like to learn more about metal building systems options please feel free to contact me.

  • Lee Company, Bldg. 8

The Lee Company in Westbrook, CT is a manufacturing company specializing in producing miniature hydraulic parts for aerospace, automotive and medical fields and industries. They are a family owned business with several locations including the one on Pettipaug Road in Westbrook, CT.

Pat Munger Construction has developed a positive, mutually beneficial business relationship with The Lee Company and we have worked together to complete a variety of construction projects for their manufacturing company. These projects include roof repairs on various buildings, soffits and siding replacement on Building 4, and most recently the completion of a 30,000 square foot building, Building 8.

Building 8 is a partial cold storage building consisting of 10,000 square feet of heated space and 20,000 square feet of unheated space. The heated space allows for the storage of sensitive equipment. The building is a pre-engineered steel building from Varco- Pruden Building Systems.

Lee Company is an ever-expanding company and this facility allows for the onsite storage of equipment and furnishings while areas of the campus are being renovated. The building features a Varco-Pruden, C- B-1 frame system with one column per frame line in its 100-foot width, Varco-Pruden 24-gage standing seam roof system which is the workhorse of the Varco-Pruden family of roof systems, and Varco- Pruden interior metal liner panel for durability and appearance.

The project also required site work, paving, and site drainage work. One particular challenge was the pouring of a 608-yard concrete slab. This was successfully accomplished using only one slab pour.

Munger Construction wishes the Lee Company well in their continuing growth and expansion.

  • Bishops Orchards

Pat Munger Construction is providing general contracting and construction services to complete a new, multifaceted addition for Bishops Orchards and Farm Market in Guilford, CT. Bishops is a family owned and operated farm market that has been in business since 1871. Consistent growth, health trends and continual customer requests for additional product lines created a space shortage in many different areas of their current facility. This led Bishops to invest in an additional 7,220 square feet of space to serve sales, office, bakery and kitchen, freezer and cooler, storage and common area requirements.

"Once we received our design plans we went directly to Munger and asked how they would go about helping us with our renovation. We did not seek a proposal from anyone else," said Keith Bishop, Co-CEO. "We have a high regard for Munger as they have delivered quality work, on schedule, for all the previous projects they have done for our family business, added Jonathan Bishop, Co-CEO.

This is the eighth addition for a facility, which originated in 1928. The challenge is to blend the current renovation with the prior seven additions. According to Michael Cormier, Project Manager, "this complex project enables Munger to showcase a wide variety of talents such as carpentry and framing, masonry, structural steel, roofing, interior trim and fit- out and mechanical services." "This is a challenging job with many hi-tech elements."

One unique characteristic is the addition of a 1½ story octagonal shaped entrance with a wrap-around porch. An additional challenge is the upgrade of existing facilities to the same fire and safety code levels as the new addition.

An on-going challenge is that the majority of work is performed during business hours. Particular attention must be paid to ensure that areas are accessible and safe for employees and customers at all times.

Why not stop by and see what's new at Bishops Orchards and Farm market today?

  • Do you have an old or outdated roof on your metal building? There is no need to remove an old roof at high cost, possible risk of weather damage and interruption of you business. The alternative is the "Roof Hugger" retro-fit roofing system.

The "Roof Hugger" system provides a secure, one- piece attachment designed to address the problems related to covering old and out dated metal building roofs. The sub-purlin system, when used as part of a total roof-over system, allows for the existing roof to remain in place while the new roof is installed without a shutdown in business operations.

The "Roof Hugger" system maintains the integrity of the original design loadings. It also achieves "thermal break" air space between old and new roof sheets. This allows for optional insulation.

We have used the "Roof Hugger" system successfully on a variety of projects throughout the past five years. Please give us a call if you would like further information on the "Roof Hugger" system.
