David's Picture

GO GREEN!!! No this is not a belated St. Patrick's Day message, but rather very prominent buzz-words in today's society. There is an ever-increasing focus on corporate social responsibility to do what is right for the environment. Pat Munger Construction has made a commitment to energy efficiency and exploring feasible solutions to protect the environment by utilizing renewable energy.

As a first step, Munger because a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding green building practices and education. The USGBC is the developer of the LEED system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Recent legislation amending the State Building Code will go into effect in 2009. This legislation provides minimal levels that must be achieved to become LEED certified buildings.

Didyou know that recent studies have determined that being a "green company" distinguishes you from your competitors?A greater number of customers will do business with your "green" company than with your "non-green" competitors. The morale boost for your employees is an added bonus to going "green."

Going "green" for Munger Constructionis a huge undertaking involving all of our employees, sub contractors, customers and business relationships. However, we are committed to providing our customers with "green" choices and educating people of the incentives that go along with making these changes for each company.

We are still in the learning phase of this process so stay tuned for futureupdates. As we move forward in becoming a "green" company ourselves we also encourage you to consider evaluating your options on going "green." Munger Construction is prepared to offer our services to assist

you in this process. Won't you join us in our efforts to " GO GREEN?" You'll be glad you did!

Sincerely,

David A. DeMaio, President

Recent Success Story

Munger Construction recently completed a 15,000 square foot fit-out of the last space available in the building owned by Fred Petrella and Richard Michaud of CT Realty Group, LLC, located at 1 Commercial Street, in Branford, CT. Previously Munger Construction completed 3 other fit-outs at this same location. This project was completed to house 454 Life Sciences, a biotechnology company specializing in high-throughput DNA sequencing.

This project included a variety of architectural upgrades to the exterior features of the building including windows, entrance canopies and EIFS Systems. Significant interior work was also needed to transform the raw industrial space with block walls, bar joist roof and concrete slab into workable space to house 454 Life Sciences. The scope of work included major mechanical/electrical systems to support Clean Room labs and Class A office space environments. Fit-out also included a back up power generation system to support the company's gene sequencing machines.

Munger Construction wishes 454 Life Sciences continued success in their new facility and thanks Fred Petrella and Richard Michaud of Corner Properties for their continued confidence in our company.

Employee Spotlight

Dan Cauley came to Munger Construction in July of 2003, through a temporary agency, when Munger needed to boost our carpentry work force to handle certain projects. It immediately became apparent that Dan would fit nicely into the Munger team. After going through the pre-prescribed time frame with the temporary agency, Dan was offered a full time employment package at Munger Construction.

Dan is a valued component of our field operations. His excellent carpentry skills and ability to quietly get along with others are highly valued qualifications. Dan is knowledgeable about all aspects of carpentry. He easily works side by side with other employees on any job site, -OR-, Dan can be left alone on a job site with confidence that the job will be completed with a high degree of competency.

Dan lives in North Haven with his wife, Pat. Dan enjoys spending time working on his own "fixer-upper" home. On those rare occasions when he is not doing construction for work or pleasure, he and Pat enjoy skiing at Killington in VT, a mountain he actually worked at for many years. In the warmer months they both enjoy hiking around New England.

Dan is truly an asset to the Munger Team and we value him highly as a trusted employee. Thanks Dan!

Tech Tip

David's PictureA drip strip is a strip of clean, crushed or decorative stone, placed against the building foundation and projecting out from the foundation 24"-36". The purpose of a drip strip is to absorb rainwater from the sky and gutter overflow, thus preventing dirt and mulch from being splashed up on the building sill material. This helps prevent premature rotting of wood siding and rusting of metal siding panels. Good design dictates 6"-8" of space between the bottom of the siding and the finish grade.

Drip strips are easily incorporated into landscape designs. Munger Construction can offer a free evaluation of your building to determine if drip strips would be of value to you, and then arrange for professional installation.
