Message From The President

David's Picture

In my previous President's Message I focused on Munger Construction's commitment to energy efficiency and exploring feasible solutions to protect the environment by utilizing renewable energy.  (Going Green) In this issue I would like to update you on our progress with our Green Initiative thus far.

The process began with an energy audit of our company by Alliance Energy.  Following this audit we filed an application with the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund for incentive grant money to pay for a portion of capital costs for a solar energy system.  Approval of our request will provide us with payment for a percentage of the costs involved in installation of a solar energy system at our corporate office in Branford, CT.

Munger Construction's Green Initiative focuses on two basic components.  The first component is our internal look into the "green mirror."  By examining ourselves we can determine how to better operate our business keeping the environment in mind.  The second component emphasizes our ability to look externally and build up our capabilities to offer services to our customers following green building practices.

In order to begin addressing both the internal and external components of our Green Initiative we have made the commitment to install Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on the roof of our corporate office here in Branford, CT.  This step will provide us the benefits of solar energy usage, as well as expand our knowledge of renewable energy options and provide us with the experience necessary to offer these types of services to our customers.

Munger Construction is excited about the progress we are making with our green initiative.  Watch the roof of our building and stay tuned for further updates!

Sincerely,

David A. DeMaio, President

Recent Success Story

Shoreline Pediatrics SPAM

In our last newsletter we included a photo of the second project we were working on for Shoreline Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (SPAM) in our Work-in-Progress section.  Recently we completed this 3,500 square foot addition to their existing facility at 1110 Durham Road, Madison, CT.  This addition included four new examination rooms, a new laboratory, new business office, new entrance and waiting room area, new staff lounge, and new central core nurse's station.  The project also included remodeling of the existing space to create rental space for associated professionals.  One special feature of this project was the extensive and detailed millwork and cabinetry to provide aesthetically pleasing, state of the art storage spaces and bench areas.

While all work was in progress, the doctor's office continued to operate to full capacity.  This presented special challenges to keep construction work running smoothly without interruption of the pediatrician's office schedule and clients.  "We have been extremely pleased with the final result."  "Our new office has turned out as we hoped," stated Dr. Bruce Freeman and Dr. Edward Gleich.  They also spoke highly of the project supervisors for both this project and the previous one.  "John DeSarbo and Michael Cormier were truly outstanding in their ability to supervise and communicate between our architect, the various subcontractors and us".

Munger Construction truly appreciates the confidence and trust SPAM has placed in our company throughout the completion of their two construction projects. We value our long term, repeat customers greatly and we wish everyone at SPAM the best of luck in their newest facility in Madison, CT.
Work-in-Progress

Colonial ToyotaColonial Toyota has contracted with Munger Construction to complete a multi-million dollar complete renovation and multiple additions to their existing facility on the Boston Post Road in Milford, CT.  Not one square foot of the existing building will be left untouched.  During this extensive construction project the service bays are still open and operating while Munger works around them.  The project is expected to be turned over to Colonial Toyota in multiple phases with a completion date at the end of 2008.

OPUS InteriorOPUS, a company specializing in high-end audio-visual systems for businesses and residential customers has contracted with us to provide an 8,000 SF business facility on Montowese Avenue, in North Haven, CTOPUS is moving from a facility they have outgrown on Willow Street in New Haven and will initially occupy 65% of the new space with the hopes of finding a tenant for approximately 3,000 SF.

DeGrand In ProgressJohn DeGrand & Son, a third generation moving and rigging company, has been working with Munger Construction on the planning and design phases of a new building throughout the past 4 years.  Recently Munger began construction of a 44,000 SF facility with 40,000 SF of high rack storage warehousing and the balance of space being used for new business offices.  This is an addition to their current facility on Island Lane in West Haven.

Employee Spotlight

In September 2008, Scott Croteau, will mark his 5 year anniversary of working for Munger Construction.  Scott has an excellent mechanical aptitude, which is a great asset to our company.  While the majority of his time is spent working in the field, Scott also puts in extra hours on maintenance and repair of the company tools and equipment.

Scott consistently employs creative problem solving skills.  One recent notable example is his original design for a portable and adaptable exhaust system to safely and conveniently use our concrete demolition saws and other similar equipment inside occupied buildings. Scott's innovative solution to this problem of equipment exhaust proved to be a big money saver for Munger Construction.  Now the need to sub-contract out this type of work to outside vendors is eliminated, and we save the cost of equipment rental fees by operating this machinery more efficiently in-house.

Scott lives with his wife and two daughters in Wallingford CT.  When not working or finding ways for Munger Construction to save money, Scott enjoys spending time with his family, especially at their home on Casco Bay in Maine.  Scott also enjoys his hobby of remote control boats, cars and trucks.  His excellent mechanical aptitude comes in handy when it comes to repair and maintenance of his "toys" as well.

Scott is a hard worker who works well with other members of the Munger Team.  His pleasant personality and sense of humor contribute much to create a positive work atmosphere.  Thanks for all you do Scott.  You are appreciated!!!

Tech Tip: Occupancy Sensor Light Switches

Sensor Light SwitchHave you ever considered occupancy sensor light switches to replace standard on/off light switches?  Occupancy sensor light switches sense when people enter a room and the lights turn on and remain activated until the room has been vacated for a predetermined amount of time. This feature saves energy by increasing the life of the light bulbs, thus reducing replacement and disposal costs and saving money on maintenance and utility bills.  The overall reduction in energy consumption creates a benefit to the power grid as well.

Sun sensor switches further reduce energy consumption by sensing the amount of natural daylight entering a room. These switches automatically turn lights on and off depending on the amount of natural light in the room.

Both these items are relatively simple and inexpensive to install and provide immediate paybacks, including $20 rebates per light fixture.  Why not consider one today?

Thanks for reading our newsletter. We hope that you find the content to be timely, appropriate and beneficial. Your feedback is always welcome.
