SAFETY FIRST!  Although this statement may be familiar to all of us, it is of utmost importance in the construction industry.  Munger Construction is dedicated to creating and maintaining the safest possible work environments for its employees, sub-contractors and our customers.

Previously, all employees were certified in an OSHA 10-hour outreach program for construction. Additionally, we developed a complete Company Health and Safety Program, which is distributed to all employees and available for review in our jobsite trailers and our corporate office.

In the Spring of 2008 Domenic Maturo, an employee of 9 years, took on the position of Safety Coordinator for our company.  A percentage of his work hours are now dedicated to maintaining our safety program and ensuring all employees and sub-contractors are following proper safety procedures at all times.  In July 2008 Munger also established a Health and Safety Committee (HSC) headed by Domenic and comprised of management and Munger employees who meet monthly to review and assess the needs of the Company Health and Safety Program.

In October 2008 we introduced a Health and Safety Incentive Program focused on eliminating lost-time injuries or incidents.  For every 90-day period without a lost time injury or incident, the company will reward our employees with a company breakfast.  At the publication of this newsletter we were incident free.  As a further incentive, the company individually recognizes every employee who demonstrates attention to safety above and beyond what is required.  Employees are nominated on a monthly basis by co-workers, job supervisors, and/or HSC members.  All chosen employees are rewarded and recognized with their name engraved on a plaque in our corporate office.

In another effort to enforce Munger's commitment to safety, all Munger employees recently completed OSHA required, Sit-Down Counter Balanced Lift Training (forklift training).  David DeMaio, Michael Cormier, and Domenic Maturo completed the course certifying them as trainers.  Then Domenic provided both classroom and practical application training to the rest of the Munger employees.  David, Michael and Domenic have also been trained as instructors for man-lift operations and employees will be trained in this area in the near future.

At the start of 2009, Munger Construction will offer voluntary first aid training and additional first responder training to any interested employees. The goal is to train employees to be prepared for any emergency situation that might arise.

As you can see, I have made a commitment to promoting and maintaining health and safety at all times.  A safe work site is not an option but a requirement.  I am proud of our company commitment and applaud my loyal employees for their continued efforts in always putting SAFETY FIRST!

Sincerely,

David A. DeMaio, President

Recent Success Stories

DeGrandeJohn DeGrand & Son, Inc. is a third generation moving, rigging, and storage company located on Island Lane in West Haven, CT.  Recently Munger completed a 44,000 square foot warehouse addition that is 40 ft. tall in order to accommodate high rack storage.

Prior to beginning construction, Munger completed extensive site work due to unsuitable soil conditions for building.  Another challenging aspect of the project was how to architecturally tie in the large, tall warehouse addition to the existing facility.  Dividing the building with "Egyptian White" on the top portion and "Cool Sierra Tan" for the lower portion created a very pleasing visual effect.

A feature that the DeGrands particularly like is the full height metal liner panel on the inside of the warehouse walls.  This panel is durable, adds light reflectivity, and presents a neat and clean appearance.

Munger Construction wishes John DeGrand & Son, Inc. much success in their newly expanded facility.

OPUSOPUS, a company specializing in high-end audio-visual systems for businesses and residential customers, recently contracted with Munger to complete an 8,000 square foot, pre-engineered steel building on Montowese Ave. in North Haven, CT. After nearly 2 years in the design phase, their new facility is now complete.

Owner, David Barson, who holds an architectural degree, spent a great deal of time focusing on creating a unique new building.  Barson took a relatively plain, pre-engineered building footprint and painstakingly thought out details including roof pitch, storefront entries, EIFS, window locations, and loading dock details.  He paid special attention to incorporating metal building components from the exterior design into the interior of the building.  Two examples can be seen in the continuity of horizontal and vertical line details, and unique color coordination between the facility's exterior and interior.

The completed facility includes office and business space along with warehouse and assembly areas.  Initially, OPUS will occupy 65% of the new space.  The remaining 3,000 square feet is available for tenant use.  If you are interested, please contact David Barson.

Munger Construction salutes David Barson and his efforts to create a functional yet aesthetically pleasing new business facility and we wish OPUS all the best in their new building.

Mill Pond VetWhat's the story with the old 7-11 Store on Route 1 in Branford, CT?  We have heard that question multiple times lately and are proud to welcome the Mill Pond Veterinary Hospital to its future location.  We are currently in the process of a complete renovation and makeover of the old convenience store into a full fledged, modern, high- tech veterinary hospital.

The vision of Dr. Deborah Yarrow is evident in every nook and cranny of the project.  Her vision includes a bright and airy entrance, inviting reception area, modern examination rooms, comfortable, well ventilated dog/cat kennel areas, and high-tech dental, surgery, and x-ray facilities.  Keep an eye on this exciting project in the weeks to come.  We know both "2-legged and 4-legged creatures" will enjoy this new space and we wish them much success.

Oxley, Inc. is a manufacturer of a complete range of standard electronic components for interconnection, EMC filter & display applications, as well as custom design and manufacturing facilities for non-standard applications.  The diversification of their products includes telecommunications, aerospace, military technology, lighting systems, and data tagging markets.  Oxley's headquarters are located in northern England but they have a branch in Branford, CT at 31 Business Park Dr.   Munger Construction has enjoyed a positive business relationship with Oxley, assisting them with their construction needs throughout the past several years.

Recently we began an expansion project for Oxley as they acquired additional space in the building they are currently located in.  The project consists of interior fit up work for offices and production areas.  Munger Construction would like to thank Oxley, Inc. for their confidence in us and wish them continued success in their newly expanded facility.

Employee Spotlight

In September 2005, Munger Construction officially hired Shaun Dwyer as a member of our estimating and construction team.  Shaun worked as an intern for us for two semesters while completing his Bachelors of Science in Architectural Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA.  We were extremely pleased with Shaun's skills and work ethic and felt he would fit nicely at Munger Construction as an additional estimator and inside project manager to help support our growing business needs.

Shaun has truly risen to the challenge, gaining knowledge and confidence throughout the past 3 years.  Shaun has excellent computer skills and has mastered VP Command, the Varco-Pruden Buildings estimating program.  Using this program Shaun is able to produce accurate and detailed estimates.  Future plans include getting Shaun more involved in field activities to enhance his estimating skills.

When not working at Munger Construction, Shaun enjoys spending time with his fiancée, Aimee, and getting away to relax together.  Being an avid Red Sox fan, Shaun periodically returns to Boston to catch a game at Fenway Park.  In the warmer months you can find him playing men's softball for Route 80 Lumber/Millwork and Apizza Grande.  And not to slight the cooler months, Shaun takes on the role of armchair quarterback by following the weekend football games.

Shaun is a cordial, polite young man who has become comfortable and confident in dealing with customers and sub-contractors.  He exhibits professionalism in all of his business dealings and continues to grow and expand his knowledge and skills.  We are fortunate and proud to have Shaun on our team.  Thanks Shaun!!!
