Following recent allegations of soring by trainers and owners, the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association is expressing support and encouragement of further investigation into the use of action devices and performance packages in the training and showing of Tennessee Walking Horses.  The devices and methods in question are often used as part of the abusive act of intentionally inflicting pain on horses to improve or exaggerate their gaits. Read More...

State Veterinarian Issues Wild Hog Transport Order

The State Veterinarian has issued an order specifying conditions under which wild-appearing hogs are to be transported in the state.  The order was issued in support of legislation passed this year by the Tennessee General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Bill Haslam making it illegal to transport and release wild-appearing hogs without proper documentation. The new law goes into effect July 1.  "Wild hogs have the propensity to reproduce in great numbers, carry diseases, destroy crops and cause serious ecological damage," state veterinarian Charles Hatcher said. "The purpose of the order is to help reduce the incidence of disease and to support efforts to prevent the illegal transportation and releasing of wild hogs."  Wild hogs are typically two to three feet tall and up to five feet long with larger heads and heavier shoulders compared to domesticated breeds. Wild hogs also have smaller, pointed and heavily furred ears, longer snouts, tusks and straight tails. Learn More...

Penn and Cornell Researchers Spearhead the Development of New Guidelines for Veterinary CPR
For nearly 50 years, the American Heart Association, with the help of researchers and physicians from across the nation, has developed and disseminated guidelines on how best to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on patients experiencing cardiac arrest. But no such evidence-based guidelines existed in the veterinary world. Perhaps as a result, while more than 20 percent of human patients who suffer cardiac arrests in the hospital survive to go home to their families, the equivalent figure for dogs and cats is less than 6 percent.

Now the Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation, or RECOVER, a collaborative effort of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, has arrived at the first evidence-based recommendations to resuscitate dogs and cats in cardiac arrest. Read More... More information is available in a special issue of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

Undergraduates Face Interest Rate Hike on July 1

Beginning July 1, undergraduate subsidized loan interest rates may increase from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. As a result, undergraduates would pay on average an additional $1,000 in interest for each year that Congress allows the higher rate. The interest rate increase affects only new loans made on or after July 1, 2012. The rate increase does not affect previous loans, which keep their existing interest rates. Read More...
