TVMA News

Veterinary Day on the Hill - If you were unable to attend and participate in the TVMA's first ever Veterinary Day on the Hill, you missed a great event. I want to thank everyone who participated. It was a well organized, exciting, and beneficial event that truly promoted the profession of veterinary medicine and its paraprofessionals to the legislators of Tennessee. I believe that the legislators were impressed with and appreciative of the interaction with the TVMA and the profession it represents.

A special thank you goes to Meagan Frazier our lobbyist, Dr. Frankie Locklar, and Deloris Green Gaines and all of her staff for the time and expertise in making this event so successful.

Dr. Locklar agreed to give a presentation to the House Agricultural Committee and he did a great job. The whole idea was to promote our profession and it was done in an absolute fine fashion. If you were unable to attend, I hope that next year you will be able to participate. Thank you.

Dennis R. Geiser
President

FFA Veterinary Proficiency Award Sponsored by TVMA - John Stallings of Dyersburg FFA Chapter earned first-place honors in the Tennessee Association FFA Veterinary Science Proficiency Award area during the 84th Tennessee State FFA Convention on April 3.

The veterinary science proficiency award is designed to recognize students who are involved in a supervised agricultural experience in which the student owns the enterprise or works for a business that includes working with veterinarians in clinical practice, research facilities, colleges of veterinary medicine, animal health industry or any other environment in which they assist veterinarians in performing duties related to the health of people or health and welfare of large and small animals. This experience may include wage earning, entrepreneurial or exploratory activities not limited to hands-on care of animals, management of business aspects of a veterinary practice or working on legislative or regulations relating to animals.

The Dyersburg FFA member's agricultural education instructors and FFA advisors are Chris Cummins and Jessica Cummins. This award is sponsored on the state level by the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association.

TVMA Participates in Ag Day on the Hill - Tennessee lawmakers celebrated Ag Day on the Hill on March 20 at Legislative Plaza. The annual event highlights the importance of farming and forestry to the state of Tennessee. Agriculture is one of the top industries in Tennessee that contributes more than $71 billion a year to the state's economy and employs nearly 364,000 residents.

Ag Day on the Hill featured a variety of exhibits and activities including a cattle weighing contest, live animals, farm equipment, special presentations to the House Agriculture Committee and a goat milking contest between Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Beth Harwell.

Speaker Harwell walked away the victor and The Farm and Forest Families of Tennessee presented a check for $750 to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee in honor of her win.

Tennessee has more than 78,000 farms representing 10.9 million acres. Tennessee's top agricultural commodities include cattle, soybeans, poultry, greenhouse and nursery products, corn, cotton, dairy products and tobacco.

U.S. Tightens Rules on Antibiotics Use for Livestock. Farmers and ranchers will for the first time be required to get a prescription from a veterinarian before using antibiotics in cattle, pigs, chickens and other animals, federal food regulators announced on Wednesday. Officials hope the move will slow the indiscriminate use of the drugs, which has made them increasingly ineffective in humans. Read more...

The American Embryo Transfer Association recently adopted the following position statement. - "The American Embryo Transfer Association considers embryo transfer to be the practice of veterinary medicine. Embryo Transfer necessitates the use of prescription pharmaceuticals within a valid veterinarian-client patient relationship. The AETA code of ethics obliges its membership to be in compliance with the veterinary practice acts of the states in which they practice." You may visit the AETA website or contact the AETA Board via email: aeta_board@assochq.org.

The Universal Microchip Lookup Tool (UMLT) was developed by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) in partnership with microchipping companies. The UMLT provides an easy way for pet owners, veterinary clinics, and animal care and control agencies to enter a microchip number and then view search results of which microchip registry the chip has been enrolled in (if a pet has been enrolled in multiple registries, the registry with the most recently updated data will appear at the top of the search results). This tool takes the guesswork out of contacting the appropriate registry, and thus can help speed the reuniting of a lost pet with its family. AAHA has prepared a brief FAQ about the tool.
