TVMA News
TVMA wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Update on the Mandatory Prescription Bill - Thanks to your boots-on-the-ground efforts, H.R. 1406, the Fairness to Pet Owners Act, a bill that would require veterinarians to write a prescription at the time of prescribing a product for a companion animal, regardless of whether or not you would also be dispensing the product to your client, continues to be stalled in the House. This legislation would also require veterinarians to provide a written disclosure notifying the pet owner that they may fill the prescription through you, the prescriber, or another pharmacy. Efforts are underway to introduce similar legislation in the Senate. We need your help again. Call your Senators today and encourage them to not support any legislation that would mandate veterinarians to write out prescriptions - something veterinarians already do. Click here for talking points and information on how to contact your Senator.
New Reporting Guidelines for Controlled Substances A new report form for those who dispense controlled substances has been made available. Information obtained from the Tennessee Department of Health indicates that even though the required fields remain the same, more options are available in the drop down columns. An online manual is available once you have logged in. For more information on the form, visit their website or contact Optimum Technology at 866-683-9771.

Sea Grant and AVMA join forces to raise awareness on medicine disposal -The most common poisons that threaten our beloved pets are our own medicines-drugs such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, antidepressants, and ADHD medications. Any medication, even those prescribed for a pet, can pose a risk to dogs or cats that might eat whatever they find. For this reason and more, the National Sea Grant College Program and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) have forged a formal partnership to raise awareness about the need for proper storage and disposal of unused medicines.
