Walmart has Veterinary Medicine in the Crosshairs
Walmart is going after veterinary clinics nationally. They have launched an aggressive campaign aimed at their customers, urging them to take action and call on Congress to require mandatory prescription writing by passing H.R. 1406, the Fairness to Pet Owners Act. WalMart just sent out this message in support of the bill which would impose new stipulations on veterinary prescriptions. It would require a veterinarian to 1) write a prescription whether or not he/she will dispense the product; 2) provide a written disclosure notifying clients that they may fill prescriptions at the veterinary clinic or at an off-site pharmacy; and 3) verify a prescription electronically or by other means consistent with applicable State law. The bill has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Health. Tennessee Representative Marsha Blackburn is a member of the subcommittee. We urge you to contact Rep. Blackburn.

Starting Salaries and Job Offers Down in 2011 for New Veterinary School Graduates
In its annual survey of graduating veterinary students, the AVMA has found that recent graduates from veterinary schools are getting fewer job offers and earning less in their first year of practice. In cooperation with the 28 U.S. veterinary schools and colleges, the AVMA conducts an annual survey of all fourth-year veterinary students in the United States. At the time of this year's survey, 74.3 percent of the students said they had received at least one job offer or offer for advanced education, which is down from 2010, when 78.9 percent had received offers and 2009 when 79.5 percent had received offers. UT Veterinarians see promise in stem-cell therapy. Last month, news outlets reported Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning had flown to Europe to have stem cells injected in his injured neck. The treatment - in which Manning would have given a blood or tissue sample, and his own stem cells would have been grown in a culture, isolated and injected back into his neck with the hope they'd decrease inflammation or even regenerate tissue faster - is not yet approved in the United States. The Federal Drug Administration puts biologic products under its purview, and it says there's not yet enough evidence the procedure is either safe or effective. But some professional athletes - including Manning and fellow veteran NFL player Terrell Owens - have gone out of the country to get it. Read More...

EPA to Increase Ristrictions on Flea and Tick Products
There are many EPA-registered pesticide products on the market today to treat pets for fleas and ticks. When used according to label instructions and precautions, pet products can be very effective, but when misapplied or not used according to directions, pets may be unnecessarily exposed to pesticides and could become ill.
Veterinarians are encouraged to report pesticide-related incidents involving domestic pets through a new reporting page developed by the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) and EPA. Reporting will help improve the quality of all animal incident data received by the EPA. Please submit reports using the quick and easy Veterinary Pesticide Adverse Effects Reporting portal. Federal Legislation Monitored by AVMA
Congress continues to work on key AVMA legislative issues. AVMA Governmental Relations Division wants to remind AVMA members that your voice is important. Let your congressional representatives know where you stand!
H.R. 1406 - Fairness to Pet Owners Act - Imposes new stipulations on veterinary prescriptions. AVMA urges the House to consider the burdensome nature of this legislation on veterinary clinics and defeat the bill.
H.R. 2112 - Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2012 - Funds the U.S.D.A., the Food and Drug Administration and related agencies for fiscal year 2012. The Senate has not moved yet on the legislation. AVMA urges the Senate to take up the appropriations bill and maintain funding levels for key programs.
H.R. 965 - Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act of 2011 - Amends the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to preserve the effectiveness of medically important antibiotics used in the treatment of human and animal diseases. AVMA opposes this legislation because it would increase animal disease and death. AVMA urges Congress make decisions based upon science when considering legislation concerning the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.

Horse Slaughter Bill Introduced on the House Side
Reps. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) introduced H.R. 2966, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011 on September 19, 2011. The House bill is the companion bill to S. 1176 introduced in the Senate by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) in June.
The bill would amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption.
The AVMA has been actively opposed to this legislation in the past. Horse slaughter has not occurred in the U.S. since 2007, when state bans and restrictions on funds for USDA inspections of horse processing forced the last remaining facilities to close. |

Foundation Earns Four Stars
Kudos to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation for reaching new heights. As a matter of fact, you can't get any higher. Charity Navigator, the leading charity evaluator in the country, recently awarded the AVMF four stars for the foundation's sound fiscal management, and commitment to accountability and transparency.
The coveted four-star rating is Charity Navigator's highest, and achieving such status isn't easy. Charity Navigator evaluates more than 5,500 charities. More than 230 of them are in the Animal Rights, Welfare and Services category, which includes groups such as the AVMF, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Morris Animal Foundation and the Humane Society of the United States. The AVMF is one of only 53 charities that received a four-star rating in that group.
It takes a lot of effort to achieve such status. And while the four-star rating certainly is something to celebrate, it's even more reflective of the level of service and commitment the AVMF provides its donors and those who benefit from foundation generosity. More donors than ever are demanding greater accountability, transparency and quantifiable results from the charities they support. Earning Charity Navigator's four-star rating is proof that the AVMF is meeting those standards. |
