Legislative
Tell your Member of Congress to oppose and NOT cosponsor H.R. 1406!
H.R. 1406, the Fairness to Pet Owners Act of 2011, would allow Congress to mandate how you run your practice by requiring all veterinarians to write a prescription at the time of prescribing, regardless of whether or not you would also be dispensing the product to your client
You would also be required to provide a written disclosure that the pet owner may fill the prescription through you, the prescriber or another pharmacy.
This legislation is unnecessary and redundant. AVMA policy already encourages veterinarians to write a prescription in lieu of dispensing when asked by a client. And pet owners already have the ability to take a prescription to be filled at the pharmacy of their choice.
This bill is an unnecessary regulatory burden imposed on veterinary practices.
To learn more about why AVMA opposes this legislation, see our issue brief click here.

Summer Missions with CVM Several years ago I wrote to many of you about the opportunity to help support University of Tennessee veterinary students who desired to be involved in veterinary missions. At that time we raised enough money to send students to Nicaragua, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Africa where these students partnered with a mission organization and spend 1 to 6 weeks working in a third world country. We have always worked through Christian Veterinary Missions (CVM) and other Christian missionary organizations. We have 4 students planning to go to Ethiopia, Brazil and Nicaragua this summer.
We need your help! Our travel fund is gone and needs to be replenished to continue sending students in the coming years. The students are required to raise one-half of their expenses and we match that to make it possible for them to be involved in sharing the gospel of Christ through veterinary medicine. It changes the students' lives as well as the lives of the people to whom they minister. Let me share with you some comments from students who have been involved in veterinary missions on recent trips. One said, "Our 2 day bus ride took us to a village to care for cows and horses and develop relationships that would lead to opportunities to share the Gospel." Another stated," That day confirmed to me that, yes, I was there to do veterinary work, but ultimately I was there to share the Gospel and love of Jesus Christ".
If you would like to partner with these students, please consider a financial contribution to the Tennessee Travel Fund at CVM. Please be sure this is in addition to your regular support of CVM. Any amount is appeciated and will be used only to support this travel. Designate your checks for Tennessee Student Travel Fund and send to Christian Veterinary Mission, 19303 Fremont Avenue N., Seattle, WA 98133.
Your contribution will be a blessing to people who need to hear the gospel and who need care for their animals.
God Bless You
