UTCVM Large Animal Hospital Challenge

UTCVM is currently raising funds to support the planning and construction of the Large Animal Hospital. They have issued a challenge--if you give at least $12,500 by March 15, 2011, a donor will match your gift. TVMA Executive Board has agreed to donate $30,000 toward this challenge. If you are interested in making a donation but are unable to meet the minimum requirement of $12,500, here's an opportunity to add your donation to TVMA's. Veterinarian Running for State Senate Seat
TVMA Member Bryan Bondurant of Gallatin has announced his candidacy for the State Senate District 18.  The seat was held by Diane Black who was elected to Congress.  The primary election will be held January 20, 2011 with the general election on March 8.  For more information about Bryan and his position on the issues, check out his website at http://bryanbondurant.org/.  Bryan, we wish you the best!

SBA opposed to OSHA rule changes -

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) On-Site Consultation Program is a popular, mostly risk-free way for small businesses to obtain help identifying workplace hazards, advice on OSHA compliance, and assistance in establishing safety and health protocols. OSHA conducted more than 30,000 visits to small businesses under the program in the last fiscal year alone.  Read More ...

Latest numbers show recession's impact, trends in associate pay - New data from the biennial survey on compensation and benefits by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) sheds some light on the effects of the recessionary periods of 2001-2003 and 2007-2009 on the veterinary profession.

Owner salaries took a slight dip in the recessions, showing that practice owners are willing (or forced) to take a hit in the wallet during tough times. Meanwhile, associate veterinarian salaries have continued to rise almost unabated since 1997, increasing an impressive 88 percent from 1997 to 2009. By comparison, owner salaries increased by 38 percent during the same period. Other data from the survey show a change in the types of benefits that practices are offering. Read More...

Poinsettia is nontoxic but can cause discomfort in pets. Studies have shown that poinsettias are not toxic to both people and animals, but accidental ingestion can trigger varying levels of discomfort in pets, according to this article.
