God's Call Screener
Reflection

A Word of Hope
I woke up in the middle of the night, excited about the coming week of a family reunion, looking forward to seeing everybody. I lay there trying to lull myself back to sleep, knowing it was going to be a very long day the next day, which made me know that tonight might be a long night. As is my pattern in that case, I started talking to God. I started with thanks for loving me and mine, and for the gift of all of my loved ones.
Then--as is also my pattern--I started to ask for things. Things like safety, good health, guidance, funding, work, and so on. As I lay there in the soft glow of a small light, I had this sudden thought. "What would happen to me if God got a call screener?" A local radio station talk show has a call screener that counts the number of times someone calls over a certain time and blocks the call until the time is right. As many times in the day I "call" God, what would happen? I just had the most crushed feeling for a fleeting moment.
And then I had another thought. When a call comes in, and I look at my caller ID, and I see that it is any of the ones I so love to hear from, it makes my heart leap. I know that a great percent of the time there is going to be need in that call. But it is the joy of the voice that makes it all okay. Then I realize that God loved us all first. Wow, how special we are, even with the calls in the middle of the night that say thanks and could you help me and would you fix this. I am so blessed, so valuable, so lucky. I will never look at my cell phone caller ID screen quite the same again.
Prayer
Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:12-13)
