Greetings!
   TJ's Headshot
Can you believe there are less than 45 days before our personal income taxes are due on April 15? If you are part of a corporation with a fiscal year-end in December, you have less than two weeks before your corporate income taxes are due on March 15.  For accounting professionals responsible for meeting those tax deadlines and regulatory requirements, the pressure is heavy upon their shoulders to accomplish the multiple tasks before them.

For those who work with or support accountants in your professional role or hire them to do the work for you, take the time to show a little extra appreciation for their work this year. As an accounting professional for the first 15 years of my career and an accounting & finance recruiter for the majority of my recruiting career, I can personally share, it is tremendous work accountants, auditors, financial analysts, accounting managers, controllers, and chief financial officers do to keep us as individuals and organizations out of trouble with various taxing authorities.

In fact, we are currently looking for a "Controller" for one of our well established clients in San Antonio, because of an unforeseen circumstance. Therefore, if you know of any certified public accountants in San Antonio with excellent tenure and a strong work ethic, let us know by contacting your favorite recruiter with our firm. This is a great client that knows the value of their people.  Do you know the value of the people in your company?  If so, show them, tell them, and never take them for granted.

Have A Great Day Everyone!

Respectfully,

State & Federal Factoids

National & State Employment Trends & Updates

The newly updated unemployment rate for February 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is scheduled to be released on Friday, March 9, 2012, by the Department of Labor.

Factoid #1

According to an article printed in the Texas Business Today, last year, "the National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) Office of General Counsel, Division of Operations-Management, released a report (see https://www.nlrb.gov/print/1480) discussing the outcome of 14 social media cases they have investigated (e.g., involving the use of Facebook, blogging, Twitter, etc.). These cases involved employees who were disciplined and/or fired for violating the employer's social media policy. In four of the cases involving use of Facebook, the department concluded that the employees were engaged in "protected concerted activity" (see definition in 29 U.S.C. Section 157 at: http://nlrb.gov/national-labor-relations-act) because the employees were discussing conditions and terms of employment with coworkers. While the report does not give employers hard and fast rules about social media, looking at it as a whole, the report does give employers some guidelines to keep in mind when dealing with social media issues at the workplace."

Factoid #2

Did you know in the same publication, there was another article that stated it is perfectly legal for employers to hire only non-smokers in the State of Texas? It was a surprising fact to learn that the state of Texas does not have a law that protects smokers like some states do.  This is important to know if you are a job seeker who is also a smoker.  The smell of smoke on your clothing may be a legal reason an employer in the state may elect not to hire you.

Factoid #3

Another article listed in Texas Business Today,  warns employers about companies' who charge for the workplace compliance posters that they offer for free.  "The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) urges, employers to be aware of unscrupulous business operators who may try to coerce employers into purchasing required workplace posters. Obtaining these compliance posters through TWC, as always, is free.  All workplace compliance posters required by law can be obtained free of charge from the TWC website at

http://www.twc.state.tx.us/ui/lablaw/posters.html. Employers do not need to purchase these posters from private vendors. Furthermore, government-issued
compliance posters do not have to be laminated to satisfy an employer's regulatory obligation. Employers should never pay for a government service that is free. TWC has investigated reports of vendors claiming to be state contractors, inferring that employers are not in compliance with state law and urging employers to buy the posters from the vendor. TWC advises employers to disregard these vendors and consult with TWC directly to determine which posters are needed."

Do You Trust Your People?
By TJ Haygood

This week, I along with over 80 leaders from over 60 companies in the San Antonio area, spent two days in Bandera, Texas at the  Flying L Guest Ranch.  We were there as part of the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce 2012 Leadership Lab. Although I am a board member of the Alamo City Black Chamber of Commerce where I actively participate and facilitate a portion of our 2011 EPIC Scholars leadership program, it was a very different experience being a participant.

The entire two-day experience was about getting to know ourselves better as leaders and understanding how to best work with and trust other leadership styles.  The sessions challenged our ability and willingness to trust total strangers in various unpredictable and challenging situations.
Trust is a highly complicated concept that many struggle with because of past disappointments.  As a result, it may cause some to unjustly transfer those same thoughts and feelings to others in the workplace and cause us to automatically distrust them without justification.  This is not to minimize the fact there are people who are untrustworthy.  However, we must ask ourselves as leaders, do we create an environment of trust or distrust?  If we cannot trust the people in our organization, then why are they still there?  If they cannot trust us, then we have the responsibility to foster that level of professional trust in our workplace.

Although the program was not about competition, recognition was given to top performing teams throughout the event.  It pushed our limits, challenged our thoughts, and expanded our comfort zone. However, by the end of the second day of competitive and challenging outdoor events, our "Blue Team" was recognized as the #1 championship team for exemplifying the best overall example of how leaders with different leadership styles could build trust and work together to support one another and to accomplish several unexpected goals.  One key lesson learned was, every leadership style has value.

In a recent blog post on the Harvard Business Review website, there was an article titled: Do Your People Trust You?  It is a great read that I highly recommend.  It talks about some of the same concepts covered during the leadership lab.  Trust is not something that can be demanded.  It must be earned.  We must be accountable and trustworthy with our people as we expect them to be with us. As the old saying goes, "good leaders are good followers." Take the lead and foster a trusting environment for your team. The entire company benefits, when people can trust one another.

One of 28 Valid Reasons Why Hiring Managers Do Not Hire People

In one of our signature classes, "Why Won't They Hire Me," which has been incorporated into our new class "The 28 Valid Reasons Why Hiring Managers Do Not Hire People," we share some amazing facts about the way many hiring managers' make their decisions. There are many factors that influence hiring decisions but there are 28 valid ones that causes hiring managers to pass on an otherwise highly qualified applicant.  One of those reasons is, "inconsistent answers during the interview."

Hiring managers are very cautious and particular people, especially during the hiring process.  They become extra careful to eliminate all red flags during the initial and subsequent interview stage(s).  Therefore, they take their time to learn as much as possible about the people they interview before making such a huge investment of time, money, and other company resources to hire a person that has a high probability of not working out.  It is very expensive for companies to recruit, train, maintain, and then have to terminate someone because of a poor hiring decision.

To increase your chances of moving forward to the next level in the interview process, be consistent and honest with your answers.  Under no circumstances should you exaggerate or embellish the truth. Honesty is always the best policy.
