CSS Weekend Reflections Newsletter by Confidential Search Solutions |
Greetings!
Did you turn back your clock Sunday morning? If not, quickly do so before someone notices. Day Light Saving Time officially ended at 2:00 a.m., on Sunday morning, November 6, 2011. We officially are in Standard time. It was great to get an extra hour of sleep today.
As I just returned from a wonderful weekend at a Christian Women's Retreat, it was nice to refresh and rejuvenate with those who have similar goals of improving oneself. We learned about our spiritual strengths and weaknesses. It was great! In fact, it reminded me of the professional process we guide our career coaching clients through when we help them identify their strengths and weaknesses and provide various strategies to help them to best manage them. The more tools we have to help us understand ourselves, the better decisions we can make about what is best for our lives. To the men and women of our current and past armed forces, thank you for your service to our country and Happy Veteran's Day. For your convenience we have added the following link to the new Department of Labor Special Report on Our Veteran Labor Force. We hope all of our readers will have a great Thanksgiving holiday weekend. It is one of my favorite holidays. Not only because of the delicious home cooked and extremely well prepared store bought foods. Nor is it because of the precious moments we get to share with our family and dearest friends. But because my husband and I get to share another anniversary on November 27th. This year we will celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary. Wow! We are getting old but still enjoying life and are thankful for the blessings of sharing this life together. In closing, thank you to those who made a kind donation to our fundraising efforts in October for the American Heart Association. We have raised over $1,200, exceeding our goal last year. We have a few more days to close out this years' effort to reach $1,500 in 2011. If you had planned to give but forgot, it is not too late. You can donate now on my personal donation page to the American Heart Association. Your contribution will help save lives and help us reach our 2011 goal this year. All donations qualify for tax deductions. Enjoy the Holidays!
Respectfully,

Employment Trends Updates for
October, 2011
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, released by the Department of Labor, the federal unemployment rate is 9% as reported on Friday, November 4, 2011.
The October report revealed the following information as quoted by Secretary of Labor
Hilda Solis, "Our nation's labor market posted stable growth in the month of October. The economy added 104,000 private sector jobs last month, and we also added 102,000 more jobs than had previously been reported in August and September. The unemployment rate dropped to 9 percent, its lowest level in six months."
"The number of long-term unemployed - defined as Americans out of work for 27 weeks or more - fell by 366,000 in October, the biggest drop since 1948. Additionally, the jobless rate for African-Americans dropped a percentage point to 15.1 percent, its lowest level since August 2009.
"We've now created 2.8 million jobs over 20 consecutive months of private sector growth, including more than 1 million jobs this year alone. GDP growth in the third quarter was 2.5 percent - the fastest rate in over a year and nearly twice that of the previous quarter. Businesses reported significantly fewer layoffs in October. Consumer and business spending are both up, reflecting Americans' increased confidence in our recovery progress."
"Unfortunately, we continue to see job losses in government and construction, both areas where passage of the American Jobs Act would have a direct and immediate effect on job creation. Overall, non-farm payroll added 80,000 jobs in October, reflecting the loss of 24,000 government jobs and 20,000 jobs in construction. Last week, the Senate voted down provisions of the American Jobs Act that would have helped keep teachers, police officers and firefighters on the job. "
Have a Fabulous Week!

"Do You Have SAVVY in the Workplace as a Manager"
In the 71 page book, "SAVVY: Thirty Days to a Different Perspective" author and personal friend, Billi Lee gives us her definition of the word SAVVY below: "What is it?..." "Some peopel have it, some don't. Those who have it, take it for granted, assuming it is common sense possessed by all. With it...you read situations astutely. You get included and invited creating powerful alliances that guide and protect. Without it...you misread signals, count on people who won't come through, work harder ad get rewarded less. What is it? It is that mind-set called savvy; the awareness and understanding of people and systems. Savvy is not formally taught but acquired, often through the school of hard-knocks. Acquiring savvy us an internal process; it is the synthesis of information, experience and choice. I picture savvy people with invisible antenna, scanning the envrionment, alerting them to danger and opportunity. Like radar, it aids in navigatin the unknown. Savvy has always been essential for success, but players and the game they played used to be easier to identify. Savvy is even more important today because the games are more competitive, more global, more culturally specific. The players need to be more flexible, more capable of working with diverse people in diverse settings. What is it that will help you identify the game, the players and the rules? SAVVY!" To learn more, check out Billi's book online featured as our "Book of the Month". It is one of my all time favorite books for both working professionals and managers. Featured Weekend Reflections for Employees in Transition |
Are Natural Talents & Abilities Enough to Succeed in Your Company? Before you answer the question, take a moment to ponder how your favorite athletic coach on any amateur or professional sports team would respond to or how an executive in any global company would answer. In an ideal world in the minds of the young college graduate the answer may seem like an obvious yes. However, in our firm with six career coaches and four Certified Personnel Consultants, we would all share with you, the answer is no. Natural talents and professional abilities are not enough to succeed sports, similarly it is not enough to succeed in business. As illustrated in The Perfect Team (NBA, 2006), many pro players would admit that they were born with special talents, gifts, and/or passions that gave them an extra measure of success. However, they would also share with you that it took painful moments of hard work, long practices, tough coaches, competitive and sometimes even more talented players, and family members who helped them become the qualified and highly sought after professionals their teams continue to rely on each season. Additionally, they would tell you that internal fortitude, tenacity, and adrenaline helped them move from status quo to actual pros. It is a positive mental attitude and an unparalleled passion that is required to get to the next level, something anyone who is a winner can validate. Cmparatively speaking big business in corporate America is like the pros. You get in the door because of your practical experience, natural talents, potential abilities, and sometimes education. However, it takes so much more to succeed. It takes a continuous positive mental attitude. It takes working long hours to get the job done and done right. It takes dealing with challenging co-workers in a positive manner, which can lead to future leadership opportunities because of one's ability to deal tactfully with difficult people. It takes learning lessons from tough managers even when you think or feel they do not value or care you. In fact, some mangers are actually tougher on people they like. One reason given is because they see their potential and their weakness all at once, knowing that if they do not overcome their weakness, it will cripple them in the long run. As a result, they will provide extra learning opportunities for the subordinate/protege, which can be quite painful to endure. However, if one does, they will be a much better person. Therefore, employees must learn not to run from adversity in the workplace but embrace it with the understanding that it can make you stronger, wiser, and better. It can also open up greater opportunities to succeed if you rise to the occasion and respond like a pro. Much Success From All of Us at CSS |
