CSS Weekend Reflections Newsletter by Confidential Search Solutions

Greetings!
   TJ's Headshot
Welcome to the first month in the last quarter of 2011.  It is hard to believe we have already exhausted 3/4 of the year.  Where did the time go? What did you accomplish so far this year?  Can you look back over the last three quarters and see where you have moved at least one step closer to reaching your professional or personal goals?  Did you spend more time with your family or loved ones?  Did you let go of negative situations or improve your eating habits to maximize your quality of life?  If you did, congratulations!  If you did not, now is the time to "take MASSIVE action" as Tony Robbins would say.

Dr. Elon Bomani in her book, Wealth Chants wisely quoted, "To know and not do is not yet to know." Therefore, let's make sure we act upon what we know we need to do.  As we press forward in this last quarter, imagine being on a 440-relay team and you are the final running leg with the baton in your hand.  Imagine holding on to the baton with all of your might and giving it your absolute best run in the last home stretch.  You can do it!

We often know what we need to do to put ourselves and our team in the  best situation. However, we can easily allow circumstances distract us. Success is ours to obtain.  Let's offer no excuses, and do like Nike says, "Just do it!"

To jump start your career, join us for lunch on Wednesday, October 26th during our re-launch of our in demand career development training classes.  Our first class is the popular "28 Inside Reasons Why Hiring Managers Do Not Hire People." formerly known as "Why Won't They Hire Me?" Class size is limited to the first 15 people.

For those of you who want to take better control of your physical health, join us on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Brackenridge Park in support of the American Heart Association's Heart Walk in San Antonio.  It is a great event with major corporate sponsors united with thousands of walkers who are making a difference in the lives of others throughout our region. If you are unable to join us at Brackenridge Park for the American Heart Association's Heart Walk in San Antonio, you can make a donation of $25, $50, $75, $100 or more to help us reach our goal.  Just click on the following link to donate today.  We really appreciate your support!

Employment Trends Updates for

September, 2011

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, released by the Department of Labor, "The Employment Situation for September 2011 is scheduled to be released on October 7, 2011, at 8:30 A.M. Eastern Time. Real Earnings for September 2011 is scheduled to be released on October 19, 2011, at 8:30 A.M. Eastern Time.

However, the following facts are reminders and worth sharing, from the August report: "Nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged (0) in August, and the unemployment rate held at 9.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment in most major industries changed little over the month. Health care continued to add jobs, and a decline in information employment reflected a strike. Government employment continued to trend down, despite the return of workers from a partial government shutdown in Minnesota. Household Survey Data The number of unemployed persons, at 14.0 million, was essentially unchanged in August, and the unemployment rate held at 9.1 percent. The rate has shown little change since April. (See table A-1.) Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (8.9 percent), adult women (8.0 percent), teenagers (25.4 percent), whites (8.0 percent), blacks (16.7 percent), and Hispanics (11.3 percent) showed little or no change in August. The jobless rate for Asians was 7.1 percent, not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.) The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) was about unchanged at 6.0 million in August and accounted for 42.9 percent of the unemployed. (See table A-12.). "

Have a Fabulous Week!

Featured Weekend Reflections for Employers
"How Do You Deal With a Consistently Challenging Employee?"
By TJ Haygood, CPC, CTS

How Do You Handle The Situation? How do you do it?  You know the kind of employee I am asking about.  The employee who consistently complains, gossips, undermines your authority, resists corporate changes, takes too many breaks, talks too long on the phone, surfs too much on the internet, etc.  How do you handle a challenging person in the work place?

Do you try to ignore them and hope they go away?  Or do you bottle up the frustration inside and then explode at home or in the office? Many times, the situation rarely gets better.  In fact, the behavior can often become worse, which opens the possibility that some of your more productive employees may begin to leave.

As managers, we must face the fact, "one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch." Yet the time and energy it takes to warn them, document their misbehavior, then ultimately fire them and recruit a replacement is very consuming.  When some managers find themselves in a quandary like this, they often do not know what to do.

A recent article posted on CareerBuilder.com by Anne Loehr, provides some practical concrete solutions on ways to best deal with what the author refers to as "Unmanageable  Employees (UEs)." She talks about the Five-C Framework that is essential to managing UEs.   My favorite one is "Commit or Quit."  Once clear communication is given to the employee, it is then up to the employee to commit or quit.

High performing companies and proactive managers know that they cannot tolerate unproductive behavior too long without implementing a process to help correct, coach, or exit the behavior from the group.  In fact, many clients use our confidential recruiting services to help them identify a more suitable replacement.  Likewise, when manager's are the undesirable source, employees will use our confidential service for their replacement.  Always know, you have options.

Ask us about our one-on-one career coaching service and career development training classes if you need some help dealing with a challenging situation.  We give you options to consider.  Solutions are always available.     For more information on the article, click on the following link: More Info on How to Manage Challenging Employees.

Advance10 Things to Leave Off Your Resume

By Rachel Zupek, Featured Writer on Confidential Search Solutions' Online Career Portal

Everybody knows that in most situations, less is more -- your accessories, eating habits and especially your résumé. Job seekers do themselves a disservice when they send out résumés with too much information. Employers don't have the time or the patience to sift through irrelevant information like your hobbies, interests or how many grandchildren you have. Just stick to the basics and you're good to go.

Here are 3 of the 10 things to leave off your résumé and why:

1. Your picture
Why to leave it off: Unless a job posting specifically asks for your picture (and very few jobs will), don't include it just for fun. Not only are your looks irrelevant to your potential as an employee, but you're putting employers in a bad spot. If they have a picture of you and choose not to hire you, it's possible that you could come back with a discrimination lawsuit. In most cases, they'll throw your résumé away without looking at it, to avoid the issue altogether.

2. Interest and hobbies
Why to leave them off: Unless your interests and hobbies have something to do with the job you're applying for, there's no reason to include them. If you want to show how your passion for art would be an asset to a graphic design position, that's one thing. But telling employers that you love to skydive on an actuary application is another. In general, make any applicable connections between your hobbies and the job in your cover letter. Better yet, save them for the interview when you're asked what you like to do outside of work.

3. Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors
Why to leave them off: Most employers assume that if you're OK with sending out a résumé littered with typos and mistakes, you'll have the same lack of concern for the work you do as an employee at their company. While spell check picks up most errors, it can miss something major -- did you work the late night shift? Or did you forget to include the "f" between "i" and "t"? -- so have several eyes look over your résumé before sending it out to employers.
