Friday Factoid #1 for Employers: "Leadership is so Important"
Council Woman Elisa Chan of District 9 and President of Unintech Consulting Engineers, was the keynote speaker for the South Texas Women Platica Luncheon on February 2nd. A dynamic spokesperson and insightful leader, Council Woman Chan passionately stated, "leadership is so important." Then she outlined the three most important qualities she felt leaders should have as listed below:
- The ability to empathize with people. She felt it was extremely important that leaders see and understand things from others' perspective in order to be an effective leader.
- The ability to communicate and connect with other people. As an immigrant to our country from China, she has proven that without the ability to connect with others her path would have been very different in life.
- The ability to motivate and energize others with a sense of urgency.
As managers, executives, and leaders in the community, take the time to empathize, connect, and motivate others. You will accomplish more with less because others will become more willing to follow your lead and contribute to your success.

Friday Factoid #2 for Employees: "Own Your Mistakes But Be Better Next Time"
In addition to Council Woman Chan's leadership qualities shared in Factoid #1, she talked about "eight guiding principles" she lives by. "Owning your mistake but be better next time," was one of those principles.
We challenge you to be the best in your profession and add value to your employer. You want to give others a reason to defend you if private conversations occur about who to give a promotion to or who they should lay off next. Even if you are selected for a lay off, have a strong enough reputation for quality performance that any manager or co-worker will be happy to vouch for you.
Best wishes to you and your continued success!

Weekend Reflection #1:
"Are you a Producer or a Consumer?"
Did you know the World's Fair is in Taipei, China this year from May to October 2010? According to Council Woman Chan, they are anticipating that 70 to 100 million people will attend. There will be vendors, educators, entertainers, construction workers, health care providers and others flying in from all over the world to attend this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Attendees will have two primary reasons for being there. They will either attend as a producer, seeking to sell their goods and/or services or they will attend as a consumer prepared to purchase those same goods and services. Regardless if they are there to spend money or to earn money, both are necessary in order for any economy to grow.
As you reflect this weekend on your contributions to yourself, your family, your employer, and/or your community at large, think about how you can personally help to grow our economy. Become a producer. Start a new business. Learn to earn by going back to school to gain another degree or a new trade. Whatever you do, do more. Serve more, produce more, sell more, give more, and ultimately love more.
Enjoy your weekend everyone!
